About nine pages ago, ha ha.

When Basman's appeal got thrown out.

When you start describing six-figure tax evasion as offending one's sensibilities, I think you write your own argument's epitaph.

Many schools will only have 20, or even 10 children in their club, but they still have to enter for 30 children. There's also a small, probably insignificant amount of double counting as some children enter both through their school and through their chess club.
There are also likely to be schools who have 40 or 50 children in their club, but the school only buys a box for 30.
Quite possibly, but I'd guess only at secondary level. Otherwise you'd have a lot of very unhappy kids who don't get their fluffy mascots.
Yes, at secondary level, I sometimes have very unhappy kids who've won a fluffy mascot.

Fluffy mascots are subject to VAT. Though I'm presuming not counted as not seem to have counted anything else (like income & expenditure).

Anyway. Hopefully ECF have not lost too much on game fees with organisation going bust & also I'm assuming Mike (& organisation) have no voting rights in next meeting.

What game fees? The tournament wasn't graded.

Indeed they are - which is a reason to register for VAT since you can then reclaim the VAT on yout fluffy mascots.

Indeed. "Fluffy" probably makes it a luxury item.

The British tax code stood at 17,000 pages in 2015; no doubt it's still rising. It's hardly surprising that multinationals can run rings round it.

We have rather lost the way on this thread. Firstly I would like to dispense with the "SavetheUKCC" petition. If this petition received 200,000 signatures let alone the two or three hundred it has received so far it would change nothing. The UKCC will not be saved by a petition or impassioned speeches by ECF officials.

There have been various comments about Mr.Basman's financial affairs. Again nothing will change the ruling made by the judiciary or the subsequent bankruptcy. A number of contributors have suggested that accounts have been drawn up for the UKCC but when we read that Mr.Basman has no accountant and taking into consideration his various statements on-line and at court hearings it is difficult to believe he has received any professional advice. What doesn't seem in doubt is that he has made a profit from the UKCC but how much that it is not likely to be revealed on this forum so we are left with speculation and conjecture and there has been plenty of both on here.

What does Mr.Basman intend to do? Run under new management it could be as successful as before but until the ECF (or someone else) steps in to sort out all this rest assured all the wringing of hands or writing of petitions will assuredly come to nothing.

"The later stages of the tournament are ECF graded."

Indeed - but due to a generous gesture by ECF, there is no requirement for ECF membership or receipt of Game Fee.

Thanks for the frivolous part of your reply, Justin. I appreciate it.

I'd just add to my 'epitaph' that for every whale that passes by too far offshore to be within range of their rusting harpoons HMRC seem to have been directed to haul in myriad fish from inshore, including the small fry.

Fin.

Is the ECF''s generosity documented anywhere? In a junior budget for example?

Would the collapse of the UKCC have any implications on the viability of the UK Chess Academy to which it has strong links by way of the Silver Plate competition?

Also, will this finally resolve the disagreement between the ECF and the UK Academy over the latter's right to send a second England team to International Junior Events?

Did the Silver Plate competition run this year?

News to the people I've asked in the ECF. Can you elaborate? By PM for preference......

I’m quite sure that somebody could replicate the UKCC - although whether that somebody could be the ECF* is not immediately clear to me.
I’m also quite sure that Basman’s contacts/mailing list/experience would take some time to match if rebuilding from scratch.

I’ve no idea what Bazza intends to do - but I’ve seen nothing that indicates that he wants or intends to hand the UKCC to somebody else.

Anyhoo, what exactly do you have in mind when you talk about the ECF (or someone else) stepping in? To return to my earlier question, If Mr B is not involved what exactly is it that the "new management" are taking over? If he is, what exactly does "step[ing] in to sort out all this" mean?

* I’m quite sure that individual(s) within the ECF could do it if they wished. I’m not sure I’m quite as confident about the ECF acting as a collective body.

I'm assured by a trusted source that UKCC is now paying GF.
