Appears to be some sort of issue with the main grading site so I am now checking :!:

That was a provider problem outside of my control which they appear to have resolved now

Thank God for that.

Those 32 minutes in between your posts Carl had me alerting the Samaritans
to expect calls from the number lovers who are permantly logged onto
the online grading database.

I saw a game recently where a player graded 861 back rank mated a 2026+ player.
To me that is funny and yet having read this others will by now have calcualted
down to the exact figure how many grading points the lad had lost.
(and now have nightmares about it happening to them). ;)

What ever happened Carl, don't let it happen again.
Their life, and I mean their life, is in your hands.

I was investigating it 22 seconds after it failed and that included an SMS notification of the failure

It's called service, everything is monitored to that level :)

22 seconds is far too slow.

Wrists could be slashed, nooses tied round necks and
cups of poison drunk in half that time.

Since it went down I've noticed a handful of them have stopped posting.
Time for a roll call or perhaps get the authorites to drag the Thames.

That SMS notification. Does the 'SMS' stand for

Samaritans Must Standby.

Presumably for grading list afficinadoes who have thrown themselves from bridges in their despair.

It is...

I used to use a DNS failover technique so any failure would be almost impossible to spot!

I am glad I was at work at that time of day - that would have been terrible to have thought that all those lovely ratings had been lost for ever. I see it as more then just a rating database, it also is quite a nice way to find out who people are and where they are based in the country. Plus, if people disagree with me on the forums then I immediately check their ratings and see whether their opinions should be respected (I.e. higher then me) challenged (approximately equal to me) or attacked (lower then me)
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.
