I cannot believe David is 30!

Does he really play for Cheddleton? I thought he might have been poached, if I may risk a word which has caused offence on these pages before...

That's our last under 30 2500+ player gone. Who will fill the gap?

John

Does British Chess News have an editor or proof reader? The sentence about David Howell using the Caro-Kann seems to more properly belong in his repertoire choices as 'the second player', rather than with his varied choices as white against the Sicilian. And surely it is 'closed' rather than 'close' when referring to the Ruy Lopez?

I think that's harsh. John provdes an enormous amount of detailed information in these extensive pictorial mini-biographies, so occasional slips are inevitable, not obtrusive, and usually swiftly corrected.

I don't routinely read the posts but have only recently corrected another British Chess News post by private message, so these slips may not be occasional as you suggest. I have in the past suggested corrections to blog posts by Jon Bryant so BCN is not being singled out. I don't think its unfair to hope for high standards at all. My enjoyment of written pieces is sometimes marred by poor or unclear expression. I had thought John himself might aspire to certain standards.

Apologies. I have not received your pm alerting me to the errors in the DH article. Can you re-send it please and I will deal with them?

Thanks!

There is no pm - suggested changes are in my substantive post.

He now plays for Guildford, well he did this season
Further investigation reveals the following :

"David started his 4NCL career with Invicta Knights with a FIDE rating of 1432 in May 1999. By 2001 he was playing for Nigel Johnson and his Slough Sharks team. In 2004 the inevitable occurred and David transferred (as is common) to either cash rich Wood Green or Guildford. In fact it was Guildford on this occasion. In 2009 David moved to Pride & Prejudice. 2012 saw David playing for Wood Green Hillsmark. In 2015 switched to Cheddleton and remained with them until 2019 finally returning to Guildford in 2020."

Hopefully this is the correct timeline!

I realise you will score more brownie points (mostly with yourself) by pointing out trivial typos in public but would it be too much to ask to pm them next time?

On second thoughts, it might be better if you did not read the articles at all : I will not be offended. In fact, I will be rather pleased.

I think this is the first time I've not used private message for this purpose. So yes happy to oblige in future. I find it odd that somebody who has in the past routinely flagged up broken links and similar in forum posts rather than private message should be quite so sensitive about this. Its to your credit that you are producing BCN but it wouldn't take much to make it better still.

Since I am a 4NCL buff, I will say that Nigel Johnson's team was Slough, not Slough Sharks - they were even separate teams in 2003-4; and I should think that David transferred to Wood Green in the 2011/12 season, in the same way that he had moved to P&P in the 2009/10 season.

But I do agree that these posts are informative, just a shame there are no congratulations for ageing male FMs

Our plan is to cover every titled person (OTB, postal, problemists, composers, solvers, arbiters, organisers, writers, journalists, financiers, sponsors) and significant persons who are not titled who have, over the years contributed to British Chess.

In a way we are attempting to complete the job that British Chess (Pergamon Press, 1983) attempted to do but did not finish. Clearly this is a major piece of unpaid work. For some there is a huge amount of available material and for some there is not one single photograph and almost nothing else.

I'm expecting one or two people (in this place) to take pot shots, be unpleasant whilst doing nothing constructive themselves : that is par for the course.

What is gratifying is the number of messages of appreciation and support that I receive but do not report. A number of people have sent me biographical information that was not in the public domain and that is a pleasure to receive.

I'm gradually correcting errors in Wikipedia and adding entries for missing persons.

The message of support from Leonard was most welcome and is the sort of thing that keeps me going. :D

However, do not despair Jonathan. As Philip Madoc famously once said in "The Deadly Attachment" ...Your name will also go on the list!

John

I've sent you a private message. For the avoidance of doubt I've never criticised the intrinsic merit of the initiative being undertaken. I am too well aware from first hand experience and observation that there are those in the chess community who are overly critical and unpleasant. That was not my intention.
