Dear Chess Player

I am sad to inform you that as organisers of the Torbay Chess Congress we have decided to cancel the 2021 Congress.

There is clearly an ongoing risk from the Covid virus. In our judgement we cannot ensure player safety during the Congress.

On a positive note, we are planning to hold the 2022 Congress on Armistice weekend (11th - 13th November) at the Toorak Hotel.

If you won a trophy at the 2019 Congress please feel free to hold on to it for another year. If you are moving away from the area or would simply like to return it, please let me know and I will arrange to pay for the carriage.

Kind regards

Ken Alexander
Congress Organiser
Ronnie, I thought that I had read this before somewhere.

You yourself announced it a month ago on Page 7 of this thread.

The proposed move to the Toorak Hotel is new and welcome.

Hopefully Toorak Hotel could also be venue for Paignton Congress in September. Only problem with lack of space for entries of over 100 plus.

If he does it again will you claim threefold repetition?

I don't expect David to make such an error. Everyone knows the arbiter only steps in after fivefold repetition.

Personally, I would step in after fourfold repetition!
Why would an arbiter wait for the position to occur 6 times?

Get thee to the Pedants United thread.

Don't worry Ronnie, I'll add the Torbay Congress again in my list of Events taking place in 2022 in the Congress Diary Category.

Yeah. I'm hoping to play in it, if I can get the time off work. I've heard a lot of good reports about the tournament.

I expect the following to happen:
"I" is presumably the British Rapidplay's in-house epidemiologist. Do we have a name?
Hi Nick.
Something you might not like has appeared on the Yorkshire Chess Association website regards to the cancellation of the British Rapidplay. Worth a read.
Steve Mann has backed Brent Kitson on the cancellation and posted his strong views aswell including about a coach holiday to Dunoon.

There is however the empirical evidence of the various tournaments that have already taken place, which are not rumoured to have been spreaders of disease.

Yeah. I can't believe Steve Mann has written that, backing Brent Kitson.
Each to their own I suppose.
One thing, I have learnt by posting so many Deaths and Obituaries is that only 3 were Covid-19 including my friend Geoff Robinson and even then he was in hospital with serious underlying health issues.
I just need to pop out to post my entry for the Scarborough Congress and buy a Blackpool Gazette.
Back soon with some sad news.

If the ECF gave me the funding, I would run this event at Golders Green over two weekends, with 100 players at the venue each time.
