With 2 rounds to go we have 4 norm seekers still in with a chance.

FM Ghasi needs 1/2, whilst FM Carstensen, FM Eggleston and FM Sturt all need 2/2 for an IM norm.

All the unrated players in the event have scored at least a point and so will get a FIDE rating if their performance is above 1201.

Congratulations to Ameet Ghasi on beating GM Igor Rausis in round 8 to score a well earned IM norm. Not a bad return to competitive chess!

Yes, a great comeback by a player who in his teens had promise not far short of David Howell and who was highly regarded by the late Tony Miles who helped at Birmingham's Checkmate junior club. When Ghasi impressively won the British Rapidplay championship in his mid-teens, he looked nailed on for at least an IM title, but then he almost stopped playing for a few years. If he continues now, i would expect him to advance well into the 2400s and possibly into the 2500s. I hope that the Friends of Chess and others will give him support in developing his rare talent.

Ghasi's final score was 8/9, which is all the more impressive when you consider that he lost to Arkell in round 1 and then reeled off 8 straight wins. Wonder how many rating points that gained. It would be nice if that took him over 2400 for the first time. Did anyone (such as the juniors) gain lots of rating points?

My calculations are that he gained 33 points, taking him to exactly 2400.
