it is good to see the Grand's comeback continues. I'll be there and encouraging friends to visit for a great congress.

We are pleased to report that, given there are £4,600 in cash prizes, we are now at just over 100 entries. Our Congress sold out last year and there is a good chance it will sell out again this year.
Please note that there will be a late entry fee of £10 after this weekend.
We therefore encourage all those interested to enter soon to avoid the late entry fee, guarantee their entry and to avoid any potential disappointment.
The Open section looks particularly attractive with a £1,000 1st prize and only 21 players who have entered so far.
The event is being held at a luxurious hotel near the sea, with easy parking, good disabled access and a separate analysis area.

I was puzzled by this, because I knew for a certain fact that Bournemouth is in Hampshire.MartinSimons wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 5:27 pmThe Dorset County Chess Association is pleased to announce that entries are now open for the 6th Bournemouth Grand Chess Congress
It turns out that a recent ( 1974 ) movement in the county boundary had passed me by.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.

Private Eye always referred to this as "the infamous Heath-Walker reforms" (or some such). HW also invented "Humberside" in place of the perfectly good East Riding of Yorkshire, and there were several other monstrosities. Outrageous.
