Isle of Wight Chess Congress - 21 to 23 Feb 2025

Hi all,

Just flagging that we have an excellent Congress coming up alongside the Isle of Wight Masters. It's been a little overlooked in light or the strong Masters field. We will have around x40 DGT Smart Boards just for the congress so it's a great chance to get a chance to play on them.

Hotels are great near the venue still at Β£55PN with breakfast.

A 22 Fast Cat return would be Β£31.50 from Portsmouth after the 20% player discount.

Entry is Β£45 rising to Β£55 on December 1st. Excuse the slightly higher cost, we are on a very thin budget and need to ensure the event is a success in it's first year.

You will be able to spectate on the Masters in the room when you finish your games and watch on screens outside of the playing hall.

I see Matthew Wadsworth is playing, hopefully he can gain the rating points to get him to 2500

A very nice finish in Jovanka's game (move 48) https://lichess.org/broadcast/wightlink ... u/NXWC1aST I know it was already winning but I've not seen anything quite like it before.

Keith Arkell is currently playing Raymond Kaufman, the son of Larry Kaufman. Raymond is a 43 year old IM but his FIDE rating is only 2178. I can't see how Keith is going to get anything out of this one as Raymond's passed b-pawn looks unstoppable.

He played very well, but can anyone find the amazing saving move I had on move 33?
I asked him why he is no longer 2400: β€˜β€™In Vancouver everyone is 200 points under-rated’’.

Having cheated, I have to say the saving move would not have been in my top 19 guesses

I was expecting a quiet draw between the leaders but looks like a three result game: Cheng-Wadsworth

What would a draw or a win do for Matthew's rating?

I think he's behind on tiebreak so would need a win to win the tournament

According to chess-results, he was on +2 rating points for the tournament before today's game. That might be higher when the rules of revaluing lower rated opposition are applied. A win against a player 100 points higher is worth around 6 and a bit for a K=10 player. So a win would take him very close to 2500, but perhaps just falling short.

The 4NCL games from last weekend will also be rated on the March list.

+3.4 after the draw, joint first of 4, good result

I meant to write "top 10 guesses," but 19 is probably right too.
