Shropshire Chess Congress - 12th to 14th January 2024

Shropshire Congress is now taking entries for 2024.

The dates have been moved forward a week to avoid clashing with the Hastings Congress.
Entries likely to be limited to 150 so please reserve a place early (refunds given up to the start of the event)

When -Friday 12th to Sunday 14th January 2023

Wrekin Housing Group
Colliers Way, Old Park, Telford, TF3 4AW

5 round Swiss with 4 sections for all playing abilities.
All sections ECF rated.
Open, Major (U1900), Intermediate (U1700), Minor (U1500).

Entry Fee: £35 all sections (£30 juniors u18)

3 grading prizes in each section

Hot and cold food served on Saturday and Sunday, including cooked breakfasts and Sunday roast.

Wrekin housing group have confirmed everything on the menu has been frozen at 2023 prices.

Catering and refreshment

Friday evening- Light snacks and an honesty box
Saturday/Sunday- cooked breakfasts from the housing trust catering team
– main courses served from lunch time inc Sunday roast
Tea, coffee and soft drinks available throughout the weekend.

I will leave the names off to protect the guilty, but in this position:



Black has just played 39...h5 (moving the pawn from h7). White replied (in the above position): 40.Bxe6, losing most of his slender advantage. How should Black recapture the bishop and why?

40...Qxe6 41.Qa8 looks rather awkward for black to meet.

Given the possibility of an awkward discovered attack on the BQ if it takes on e6, I would likely have taken with the pawn fairly instinctively.
