Black may prefer not to be named. Looking at the moves I'm left wondering if he even knew which corner of the board he should be trying to drive the White king to.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 4:57 pmWho is playing?LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 3:16 pmBlack is trying to mate with bishop & knight on board 35.

One can't be too critical, given that a world champion has failed to win this ending.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:23 pmBlack may prefer not to be named. Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open
No comments on what is surely the upset of the round? Mickey Adams only drawing against Lorenzo Fava (2140)! To be fair, Fava did beat Mark Hebden in round 3.
EDIT: Looking up past results for 16-year-old Fava, which also include some wins over strong players, he is clearly much stronger than 2140!

I presume you mean a women's WC?Reg Clucas wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:39 pmOne can't be too critical, given that a world champion has failed to win this ending.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:23 pmBlack may prefer not to be named. For the male holder to mess it up would indeed be news (though some quite strong male GMs have also failed to win it)

Curiously the same K+B+N v K ending occurred in Round 3 in the game Lazarus v Saine. Black won.

Acceleration of pairings has ended after five rounds, so floats excepted everyone plays someone of the same score.

I'll go for Fernandez and Tiviakov winning jointly, just ahead of Adams, Willow and Sonis.

I think that the sex of a GM is of less relevance than their rating.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 10:17 pmI presume you mean a women's WC?Reg Clucas wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:39 pmOne can't be too critical, given that a world champion has failed to win this ending.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:23 pm

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open
I did notice that the top seven boards(!!) were all drawn in round 5. Accelerated pairings were still apparently in effect for that round, so does that make it more or less surprising that all seven of these games were drawn, which would have been a rare occurrence anyway I think?

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open
Looking at the pairings there was only board 4 where I thought a draw wasn't the most likely result. By contrast, we have huge rating discrepancies on rating on boards 2 & 4 in round 6 albeit the 1696 is performing way above his rating so far.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 1:37 pmI did notice that the top seven boards(!!) were all drawn in round 5. I'd say less surprising in the 2nd game of the day, and if black was higher rated or there wasn't much difference; you'd have to look through the games to see if there were chances missed
