7 October Jonathan Penrose Memorial Chess Challenge

Post by David York » Sun Jul 30, 2023 1:35 pm

The late Grandmaster Dr Jonathan Penrose OBE would have been 90 years old on 7 October 2023. To celebrate his life in chess a Jonathan Penrose Chess Park (public chess tables) is being opened in Colchester, where he was born.

The opening event features a simul by GM Michael Adams. It is at Colchester Town Hall starting at 1.30pm and is in aid of the Mayor’s Charities – a range of causes selected annually by each new Colchester mayor. The Penrose family will be represented at the opening ceremony.

Spectator information and tickets from https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/jonathan ... tdtcreator

As the simul is part of an event for charity, seats are not free, indeed I am shamelessly looking for some highest bidder commercial event or seat sponsors prepared to back ‘their player’! Some seats are, however, 'at cost'.

If you would like to sponsor or take a seat at a chess board for the simul then contact me for more information on [email protected]

Seats for individual players are priced to raise just a little money for charity and are only £40, with discounts and sponsorship available in certain cases.

Timing for the event at the Town Hall:
1.15pm Doors open for players and spectators
1.30pm Opening ceremony (for the chess park and simul)
2.00pm Simul begins
5.30pm Brief closing ceremony

Congratulations to Mickey Adams for a sparkling persiormance at the World Seniors Open 50+
Mickey Adams – Gold for Board 1 – undefeated with a rating performance of 2761!

Just a few days left to the Jonathan Penrose Memorial Chess Challenge and, due to a late cancellation, two seats to play Mickey are still available.

The results of the simul are at https://chess-results.com/tnr829571.asp ... art=2&rd=1 it is fair to say the GM Michael Admas had a good day.

You can see one of the two draws here: https://chess-results.com/tnr829571.asp ... art=2&rd=1

The North Committee Room at Colchester Town Hall had a big screen display so spectators could keep up with the action as Ruqayyah Rida put up stiff resistance in a Ruy Lopez.
