You'll be pleased to know that our teammate Andrew Brett won the Christmas A Event with 5/6.

And again...IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sun Dec 31, 2023 9:03 pmYay, another opponent whose FIDE rating starts with a 1 and whose year of birth starts with a 2. My favourite.

Re: Caplin Hastings 2023-24
Not attending Hastings for about the first time in 28 years I have been following the event mainly via the excellent Richard Pert commentary. High points have included Danny appearing after losing his QR on move 9 and Jack appearing after being demolished by Richard's son, Max (using his dad's opening preparation). This has really been the year when older English titled players (those who turned up) have passed on the baton to the youth. What had recently become (almost) a convention of the old codgers (at all levels) has suddenly turned into a festival of the youth ...

See the discussion of that upthread, all was maybe not as it seemed (including to Danny)Mike Gunn wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 12:50 pmNot attending Hastings for about the first time in 28 years I have been following the event mainly via the excellent Richard Pert commentary. Chess really *is* a devilishly hard game.

Jack today at last played an opponent whose rating was a larger number than his year of birth.

Four black wins and six draws on the top ten boards, the stand out result being Borna's win with black against GM Viktor Mikhalevski.

I was going to nominate Ghasi's win for that honour! (Albeit thinking of the game as much as the result). Meanwhile we now have a co-leader, one who now seems to take available pawns in the opening instead of offering them.
What are Shreyas' requirements for the GM norm, does anyone know?

1 or 1.5/2. I think it needs to be one of the top two seeds in round 9 for it to be 1/2.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 8:34 pmI was going to nominate Ghasi's win for that honour! Sounds right. Facing two very lowly rated opponents at the start of a nine round swiss does not help ...

Gupta is on the same score, so that's possible, but Lagarde is a point back so very unlikely presumablyLawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 9:19 pm1 or 1.5/2. We should expect nothing less than perfect adherence to the laws with the IA clash on board 19 today.

The Internet is currently down at the venue!!!
Shreyas needs 1.5 v a 2568 in round 9 or 2/2 v 2082
For IM norms we have
Borna Derakhshani needing 1.5 v 2393 or 2/2 v 1907
Tom Brown needs 2/2 v 2259
(subject to confirmation)
