I don't know whether Shreyas really did prepare with Freddy yesterday, as their games suggest, but if so it seems to have been a very successful collaboration.

Will Shreyas still be short of 2500 if he wins today?
Yes, he's about 2476 prior to the game.

Shreyas has drawn, do we know where he's playing next?

That's a shame. Bit surprising too how Black seemed only to have vague compensation, if any, for the exchange one moment and was then OK just a moment later. But Shreyas' last norm is surely on the horizon and is bound to secure the title too.

A better round for the one young Scottish player than all the young English ones together, it would seem!

Supratit's draw was certainly no disgrace. Or was that not the Scot you were talking about :D ?

Bai Xue won and got the norm and the women's prize.

The British Championship qualifying score appears to be 5, and the successful candidates are Villiers, Brown, Hobson, Larkin and Verbytski. Plus the winner of Ismail v Honey, if that game is decisive.

Gutted I couldn’t make it this year. My mum passed in July. And now I have to look after the dogs. And getting away is just a lot of hassle or tricky. Plus now I am more financially insecure. But I was looking through the results. And
Wondered how a 1847 was allowed in u1600. A Player who has beaten Keith Arkell online. Ofcourse he got 5/5.

Seems my trip would of been wasted then. As I only want a fair tournament if u ever play.

His name is Gerasimos Giahos. No idea why he was given an unrated status. Fide ID 4221230
Year of birth 1989.
2013/2014 and 16/17 U140 Grand Prix Winner! ;)

2015 and 2016 Chess character of the year :)

Its not a failure to lose. Its a failure when you dont try and win.

Only the Hastings Weekend Open was FIDE rated, so the organisers ignored the FIDE ratings for players in the lower sections.

That said, it is not uncommon for conditions of entry to allow ratings from sources other than ECF OTB to be used. For that matter, clauses restricting the prizes available to unrated players are also included. I don't think Hastings did either.

The 1847 is a rapidplay rating.

(edit) I thought the name looked familiar. Here's a piece in the Guardian in which he is mentioned,

It's surprising that the organisers let him play in an U1600 event when he'd just played in the Hastings Masters and scored 5/9 with a 2026 TPR.

Plus a provisional 208 rating from 2012 where he drew with Ameet Ghasi. Clearly a cock-up to allow him to enter. He single handedly ruined the online British, now he has robbed another group of players of their prize money.

In finishing on 5/9 in The Masters, he ironically finished alongside Keith, who he "beat" in the much documented online British from 2021. I wonder if the apparent slight change in the surname (Giahos / Giachos) affected any entry.

So top board in the final round was contested by two players whose last recorded ECF standard play grades were 208 and 165 in an under 1600 (nee120). Hmmmm.

"It's surprising that the organisers let him play in an U1600 event when he'd just played in the Hastings Masters and scored 5/9 with a 2026 TPR."

I'm guessing that "It's surprising" in this context means "It's an absolute ****ing disgrace".

I doubt Hans Olav Lahlum would have done that.
