The SCCU/London Club Championships Return

Post by David Gilbert » Sun Jan 15, 2023 2:00 pm

We're off again. The SCCU/London Club Championships (organised by the Southern Counties Chess Union) is back. After missing three Covid-affected years, the event returns to St Luke's Church in Kidderpore Avenue, London NW3 7SU on Saturday, 24 June 2023.

This is a six-round team rapidplay for four players (plus one optional reserve). There's three sections with average team ratings of 2100, 1850 & 1600 using the Original 1 April 2023 ratings - these are the blue ones in the Rating List. The entry fee is £50 per team, reduced to £40 for entries before 24 May 2023. We are limited to 40 teams.

The entry form & rules can be downloaded from the SCCU website https://sccu-chess.com/index.php/en/london-club-champs

Going down memory lane the 2019 winners were:
  • Average: 180 Muswell Hill
    Inter: 150 Hatch End
    Minor: 120 DHSS
Hope to welcome you back to defend your titles. Old pictures here: https://brendanogorman.smugmug.com/Ches ... play-2019/

This appears not be be FIDE rated. Any reason known?

Just innocent ignorance. If it's not so difficult we can consider for 2024.

A reminder if your Club operates in London or in an SCCU affiliated County, the SCCU/London Club Championships are scheduled for Saturday, 24 June at St Lukes Church. The April ratings have been out for a few weeks now and entries are beginning to appear. Four new ones over the weekend and ten Clubs have emailed with their intentions to enter up to four teams! Wow! There are already three entries from Surrey Clubs who didn't compete last time, so word is getting round. If your Club fancy some lively team chess on a Saturday in June go put a team together and get you entry in before 24 May 2023 and save a tenner. It'll be fantastic to see you there!

We’re filling up. Twenty teams are now entered so get a move on if you’re intending to come - the deadline for the discounted entry fee is on Wednesday, 24 May 2023. I know some teams are still working with their abacuses. Remember we’re using the original (blue) ratings for April 2023 - rapid rating where they exist and standard where they don’t. P-ratings are not considered.
Hope to see you there - it was a scorcher back in 2019, so sadly men’s shorts blowing in the breeze could be a prominent feature again!

I'm going to be there but shall try to put this image out of my mind.

Some response! Maybe it was the image of shorts flapping in the breeze or something else, but my last post and a further round of emails woke everyone up and there’s been a race to the finishing line We still have one spot available in the top section for an Average 2100 team, but otherwise we are at capacity and the tournament is SOLD OUT. There’ll be a full list of entries on the SCCU website shortly.

Updated entry.

The event took place last weekend during a heatwave - hot day, hot chess! 36 teams took part playing in three sections. Richmond & Twickenham (Average 2100), Wanstead & Woodford Dynamos (Average 1850) & Wanstead & Woodford All Stars (Average 1600) took the titles.
