From memory the 2020 event was going to have to be spread over two weeks because the first of the only available weeks clashed with term time.
I think as in 2014 and 2022, a clash with the dates for the Olympiad came into play as well. That can be relevant for the Welsh, Scottish and Irish players as well as the English.
Correct. Another thing the ECF has to consider.

Some extra information

From https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... eeting.pdf
The venue for the British Championships for 2023 had been narrowed down to either Llandudno or DMU Leicester. Hull and Liverpool were both keen to host the event in 2024 and could both offer support from the respective local councils.
No dates mentioned.

DMU presumably De Montford University

Llandudno would be a good choice, seaside events are a good option

No specific dates, though it does mention fitting in the English Blitz around various other events, including "..the British Championships at
the end of July".

I agree Llandudno would be much better :)

The electronic copy of Chess Moves, which has just landed in my inbox, informs me that the British Championships for 2023 will be at DMU Leicester, from 21st to 30th July. On checking, I see that there is also an announcement on the ECF website.

I think that he lives about 3 miles away from the venue.

Some of us will probably disappointed that Llandudno (very convenient for Ireland and more suitable for family holidays) has not been chosen.

However De Montfort University, Leicester, has long been the main centre in Britain for academic research into sports history and the English Chess Library is now hosted there.

I guess the numbers attending will determine the success of the event. As Leicester takes just over an hour on the train from St Pancras it will mean a lot of people can commute from around the London area and many other areas too which Llandudno wouldn't have been. I did play the last time they had it at Llandudno and it's a great place to visit so I can definitely see the attraction and clearly as Tim, says it's a lot more accessible to the Irish players. Interesting question though as wherever they hold it in the UK someone is unhappy and I do wonder what the criteria is to determine whether it's a success or not ie as I mention above is it numbers of players coming or or top players coming or location etc because it seems we can't have all of these.

I note that the Kingston organisers haven't said anything, they must be gutted it overlaps, but I suspect and hope it will attract a lot of entries from the London area anyway.

The university is apparently a "short walk" from Leicester station, and there are frequent trains from St Pancras - the only fly in the ointment could be continuing rail strikes ...

I see the rules for qualification from the Congress circuit have been published.

https://www.britishchesschampionships.c ... s-v1-1.pdf

The qualification year is 1st June 2022 to 31st May 2023 which should enable those qualifying to make decisions about travel and accommodation in reasonable time. What would also be nice, given the complicated nature of the formulae to determine rankings would be a list showing scores and positions.

May 23rd is a bit of a surprise.
I may have to organise a few more tournaments (there are few eligible tournaments) but this clashes with holidays and other commitments.

But not with the same rules as your Henley event as its lower rating limit means it fails to meet the British Championship qualifying criterion of "Tournaments included will be those are that are open [to] all players with no rating ... restriction". :)
