Disturbing report
The chess world isn’t a safe place for us, and it’s time to stop pretending these issues are in the past or that people are only sexist online. It’s 2022 and this happens.
The organiser did seem genuinely concerned about the incidents I described and contacted me very soon after the tweets started to gain attention. Ingvar [Johannesson], the co-organiser who I had spent a bit of time getting to know throughout the tournament, also contacted me. I know that he is a huge supporter of women in chess and I really appreciate that he reached out to ensure that I was doing okay.
So far I think they’ve responded well and my hope is that these negative events can be turned into a starting point from which we can move towards prioritising the safety of girls and women who are minorities at such events, and set a precedent for calling out inappropriate behaviour when we see it.

Talullah Roberts' experiences in Rejkjavik

Post by JustinHorton » Sun Apr 17, 2022 1:10 pm

Reported on here by Chess 24.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I think the hosts will take this seriously, unlike certain other federations. People knocking the board over when they lose is not that rare an occurrence, unfortunately.

Chess events should be safe for everybody, but chess reflects life.

Also covered by Mick Norris at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12561&p=281248#p281248, quoting the same report.

I concur with Justin that this belongs in Women's Chess.

I leave any merger in the capable hands of the moderators.

There was an amazing game from this tournament (Sukandar-Niemann), with a variation on the final position as a puzzle here (but don't click on that if you want to play through the whole game without seeing the final position):

https://chesspuzzle.net/Puzzle/548624

This position (a move later) is one of the puzzles in the August 2022 CHESS as well.

The game in full is here, it is great fun to play through it!

It is still up on chess24.com as well, but I can't link to that without giving away the final position.

I hope this did get resolved or something actually got done about it. The '60 Seconds With...' page in the August 2022 CHESS features Talullah Roberts (named as Lula Roberts) and it is a really nice piece. I had failed to make the connection, but now realised why the picture looked familiar (I was recognising it from when I read about this report earlier).

I don't know how or if it was resolved but since then she has played a tournament in Italy and is also playing top board for Jersey in the women's Olympiad (I actually did a bit of commentary on one of her games on her Twitch channel) so thankfully the experience hasn't put her off playing.

She has entered Guernsey as well.
