ECF Events 2022

Post by Roger de Coverly » Sun Dec 05, 2021 1:22 pm

On April 28th to May 1st there's the English Seniors Championship.
It's now in the ECF calendar as 5th to 8th May 2022 which avoids the clash with the final 4NCL weekend. It's still TBA as far as the venue is concerned.

Is there an intention to run the Women's Championship as a stand alone event?
According to the schedule, yes.

That was also the case in 2016-19.

There was an English Championsip, but no separate event for the British Women's title until 2021, the award going to the highest placed eligible player in the main Championship which in 2019 was Jovanka Houska who finished equal fifth.

There's some events been added to the ECF calendar in the name of the ECF.

On April 28th to May 1st there's the English Seniors Championship. I cannot help but thinking that this is one of the worse possible dates that could have been chosen given that many of the potential entrants are also long standing members of 4NCL squads likely to be fighting tooth and nail to retain their places in higher divisions. 4NCL final weekend is scheduled as usual for the Bank Holiday weekend April 30th to May 2nd.
The seniors event is now looking at alternative dates :)

On March 18th to March 21st (or possibly April 15th to April18th (Easter)) there are what are termed
English Open Standardplay Championship Qualifier and
English Women’s Standardplay Championship Qualifier

Further down the ECF calendar it's revealed what events these are qualifiers for.

English Standardplay Championships and British Major Open @ TBC
May 21 – May 25 all-day
English Women’s Championship Final @ TBC
May 21 – May 25 all-day

That's starting on a Saturday and running through to the following Wednesday. The proposed number of rounds isn't stated.

Bank holidays are
Spring Bank Holiday Thu, 2 Jun 2022
Platinum Jubilee bank holiday Fri, 3 Jun 2022

One might speculate what head count and standard of entry is required to necessitate a qualifier and final structure. Eleewhere in OTB chess, the problem of maintaining rating standards in the top section has been dealt with by the devices of holding parallel rating limited sections and by having differential entry fees. Some organisers have even adopted the deplorable policy of denying rating prizes to lower rated players.

The pther questopn that comes to mind is the relationship with the parallel Major Open. There was always a proposal that a one-off Major Open would be needed to enable players not already qualified to secure a place in the Torquay British Championship. But what of participants in the English Championship events.ratin

I see a certain replication of last year's online structure. But was the restriction in numbers required by a qualifier and final structure required by the online need for a high level of arbiter supervision? Are we talking APA events though? For the men's event, if restricted to ten players, most of the candidates would likely regard competing in a qualifier beneath their dignity and expect automatic qualification. They would also no doubt like expenses, so finance comes out of general funds or sponsorship rather from aggregate entry fees as usually applies at the British Championships.

There are now some updates on the ECF Calendar.

The "qualifiers" scheduled for 18th to 22nd March have been moved to 1st to 3rd April and are flagged as "online".

The English Seniors 4th to 8th May now has a venue, Holiday Inn Kenilworth.

English Women’s Standardplay Championships and
English Standardplay Championships are now flagged as
19 May, 2022 — 22 May, 2022 | Midlands TBC
FIDE-rated Swiss tournament with 7 rounds over 5 days Players may take half-point byes in any round apart from Round 7, and up to two half point byes can be requested. All moves in 90 minutes plus 30
Further details to follow shortly including playing schedule, eligibility and qualification arrangements if required.

There was an obvious error here, If the dates are 19 May to 22 May, it could not be 7 rounds over 5 days.

The information quoted above has now been corrected to 7 rounds in 4 days.

The playing schedule is a little unusual.

The first round is on Wednesday evening at 5pm
The second, Thursday at 11 am
The third is on Friday at 10am and the fourth on the same day at 4 pm
The fifth and sixth are on the Saturday at the same times,
Finally the last round is at 11 am.

Nove rate is 90 30.

The venue is Holiday Inn Kenilworth-Warwick, 212 Abbey End, Kenilworth CV8 1ED
I might imagine that's where the cancelled 2020 event was going to be held. Hotel bookings are through "Guaranteed Events"

Eligibility is restricted to players who are ENG on the FIDE rating list as well as by age and
Players must be born in England or have lived in England for at least the preceding 12 months.

Do we know what the "qualifier" events are for?
Not for the championship as it is not listed in the qualification rules.
And I would assume the open is open?
