Post by Roger de Coverly » Wed Aug 11, 2021 2:04 pm

Seems to be filling up quite rapidly regardless of mask games (as discussed on another thread)

As of 10th August 2021 (tournament is 10th to 12th September)

https://www.4ncl.co.uk/fide/entrants_26.htm

25 in the Open (top seed Hebden)
15 in the U2000
18 in the U1700

An email regarding the previous congress at the same venue:
The hotel will be limiting us to 50% of usual meeting room capacity in accordance with HM Government guidelines. This means that a maximum of 130 players will be allowed at present (see above).

Does anyone know which HM Government guidelines these are? I am very confused.

The previous Congress took place prior to 19th July, so whatever the guidelines were then they are not the same now.

The hotel and the 4NCL may of course have decided to maintain the same limit on entries.

The hotel may have done, but the 4NCL have gone back to the usual free for all as to what sections lower rated players can enter. At the 25th Congress, they sorted the entries by the higher of FIDE and ECF rating and assigned sections top down, I could believe that was also influenced by a ban on going into tournament rooms other than the one you were playing in.

At half capacity the playing areas were agreeably uncrowded.

Under "Information" it says:
Section allocation

Players will be allocated to sections based on rating once final entry numbers are known.
Which I had assumed meant they were doing the same thing.

Entries for this have been closed after seemingly reached capacity at around 180. With 72 entries for the top section, there's a danger of two players reaching 5/5 unless acceleration is used or the five round tournament is split into two.

That’s possible, but won’t the 22 half-point byes in round one make that highly unlikely?

Don't forget the half-point byes when a non-mask wearer refuses to don a mask at the request of a mask-wearing opponent
