Just recovering from that... It was really enjoyable. I've not played much online but you have to balance difficulty in concentrating when the dog is barking furiously at a pigeon that has dared to invade its territory, with the ability to shout at the screen when you mess it up. Both of those are not usually encountered OTB. I hasten to add I'm calling myself an idiot, not being abusive to the opponents.

A huge thank you to all the players (especially those who let me win!) for giving up their time and playing for zero prize money and appearance fees or expenses etc It was nice having a whole range of players from Svidler, Sadler, Gawain etc down to locals who have only taken up the game in recent years.

This was a fun event and thanks to Lawrence for running it. I don't know who "MerryPoppies" is, but it's a brilliant name!
I decided I was too old and past it to play bullet, but I think maybe blitz is too much after the first hour or so...

Really? Come on, you should be able to work it out. If not, you can go to their username and get both the name and picture!Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sat Jul 17, 2021 9:16 pmThis was a fun event and thanks to Lawrence for running it. I don't know who "MerryPoppies" is, but it's a brilliant name!

Ah, I didn't know you could search names. I just turn up and play moves of vastly varying quality... Thanks!
Bear in mind my second computer had a 20 kB hard disk, and my IT skills have not advanced much.

I recall the huge levels of excitement at the University College London Computer Centre in Gordon Street in 1978 when the volatile memory of the IBM System/360 had its core memory increased by 1 MB.
The cost was £1 per byte.
There was much jubilation all around as I prepared a card deck for my next program run written in FORTRAN 66.
I had a written a trivial program to model physisorption of atomic hydrogen on graphite in 1978 when 18.
