That's sad news although I understand the reasons. I've played in every Scarborough congress since 2005 and I'm sure many people can top that. Hopefully 2021 will be the comeback year.

Sad news about Scarborough being cancelled.
It is my favourite tournament. Great venue.
I would recommend all forumites enter the Scarborough Chess Congress next year.
If you haven't been to Scarborough, you've not lived.

I've played three Britishes in Scarborough, but have never entered the congress. A bit far to travel for a weekender.

You could make it into a bit of a holiday and visit Whitby or get a train down to York.

Scarborough seems to have become more prominent on the Covid modelling recently, with a 85% chance it turns into a Covid hotspot (above 50 cases per 100,000 people) on the 20th September. I guess the Council made the right call.

Possibly the financial future of the Spa Complex may have also been a factor.

I think the Spa Complex is owned by the council.
A decent venue, much improved since they fixed the lighting a few years ago.

Sounds like the ownership of the Spa is changing hands.
This has appeared on regional news under Yorkshire on the BBC red button text service:

"Entertainment venues return to council control"
"Entertainment venues on the Yorkshire coast will be run directly by the local council from January 2021.
Scarborough Spa and the Whitby Pavilion have been run by Sheffield City Trust (SCT) since 2012.
SCT, which is subsidised by Sheffield City Council, had been told its own council funding was dependent on it ending loss-making contracts with other authorities.
Its contract with Scarborough Borough Council had been due to run until 2022."

The organisers have been monitoring this situation.

It is much too early to say how this will affect the congress.

Is Scarborough Congress a possibility in 2021
.....or is it to soon to ask?

Still too soon, I'm afraid.

Although the theatre is advertising events, I've heard of nothing taking place in the Spa Centre.

I think we would be waiting for a bit more certainty in any case.

It is hoped that it will be possible to run the Scarborough Congress this year on the weekend of 29-31 October.

The Centre is planning to re-open from July so the Spa Centre itself should be available by the planned dates.
There is obviously still doubt about what the Covid situation will be then, so players may wish to exercise caution with regard to booking accommodation.

Entry forms are normally available at around this time. However, we do not intend to distribute entry forms until there is a bit more certainty about the numbers that will be able to take part.
