I've finished my game. Regrettably I lost with the white pieces against the Icelandic Gambit. Some interesting tactics. I still enjoyed the game.

Re: Scarborough Congress
Great to be back in Scarborough after an enforced year away. A fantastic congress and I enjoyed every minute of it. While some of the faces never change it was good to see some new ones; indeed the average age may well be quite a bit down.
That said Danny Gormally's comment was interesting. Perhaps not entirely appropriate but interesting ... I shall say no more!

First bits of news.
Andrew Ledger and David Zakarian shared first prize.
It was announced at the start of the final round that it was Andrew and Maggie Butterworth's last Scarborough Congress. A round of applause was given for their hard work and the organising committee are now looking for a entries secretary and someone to run the bookstall.

Next bit of news.
Apparently Mick Connor's karaoke singing went down well last night. I believe a dozen chess players went to see Mick sing a number of Elvis Presley songs including Suspicious Minds.
I hear a group of them sang The Boys are back in Town.
Mick returned to our B & B for about 2am.

No theories. But it can't be a good thing when none of the players who finished in the the top three got to play each other.Richard Bates wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 8:55 amInteresting to note the way the entries are skewed towards the Open, which i think would have been a change to what was normal prior to the pandemic. Has anyone got any theories about this (and has this been a feature of recent tournaments elsewhere)?

What did he say? This forum is my main source of "anti-social media".
"But it can't be a good thing when none of the players who finished in the the top three got to play each other."
An accelerated pairing system (much as I dislike them) might have helped in that respect. But doubtless there were good reasons for not doing that.

Everyone's a Monday morning TD.
I'm just grateful Scarborough put on the event.

It's still there - https://www.facebook.com/danny.gormally ... 0798252900 - and still not obvious what he meant or why he said it.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 10:10 amhttps://www.facebook.com/danny.gormally ... 0798252900

How? Wouldn't the likely effect have been a lower ranked player doing better than deserved because they hadn't played any of the top-seeded players and a massive tie for 1st place on, say, 4 points?Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 10:10 amAn accelerated pairing system (much as I dislike them) might have helped in that respect.
I don't see how any pairing system is going to address a problem caused by the tournament having almost 3 times as many players as is desirable for a 5 round tournament.

I'm not going to repeat it, but if I click on my link ( not your truncated version ) it goes straight there.

The experiences of the past, when such numbers were commonplace, would suggest that accelerated systems can resolve the problem of having two people on 100% at the end of the final round.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 10:44 amI don't see how any pairing system is going to address a problem caused by the tournament having almost 3 times as many players as is desirable for a 5 round tournament.
Presumably a reason they didn't use acceleration was that they didn't put it on the entry form that they might. In the conditions for Hastings, it's usually present, although that's more down to a belief that acceleration can better preserve Norm opportunities.

Was the prize money increased from what was stated on the entry form?

"Everyone's a Monday morning TD."
What a strange thing to say. I asked a question, I didn't criticize - I am grateful they put on the event as well, as I am always grateful when people stage events.
"Wouldn't the likely effect have been a lower ranked player doing better than deserved because they hadn't played any of the top-seeded players and a massive tie for 1st place on, say, 4 points?"
Indeed, one of the reasons I don't like acceleration.
"Presumably a reason they didn't use acceleration was that they didn't put it on the entry form that they might."
Sounds reasonable.
