Entry is now live for Frome 2024!
The start of the year brings as ever, news of the 2024 Frome Chess Congress - and the 33rd such event held in lovely Somerset.
The Congress is being held in the usual venue – the Selwood Academy, on May 17th to 19th.
A brochure for the event is available from the congress website and is also (hopefully) attached to this post.

New for 2024!
- Now running 5 sections: Open, U2000, U1750, U1625 and U1450
- Two new Trophies up for grabs!
- WGMs, GMs, WIMs, IMs may obtain free entry if entering by the end of March
Entry is now open at
https://congress.org.uk/congress/349/home
We have increased the number of sections to five for this year's event and we will run with the same layout as last year, which was well received.
The section breaks were tricky to make, but we have tried our best to even up the sections into numbers of around 40-50 per section, based on recent tournament entry lists.
There is now a NEW 'Standard' section with a rating boundary of 1450. We hope that this will encourage more newer and developing chess players to the event and give more people a chance to walk away with a good prize.
In 2024 there will be two NEW trophies up for grabs - the Gerry Jepps Somerset Trophy for the winner of the new Standard section (for Somerset eligible players as always) and the Gerry Udell trophy for the winner of the Team event. The new trophies have been named in honour of two of the hardest-working people in Somerset Chess, who ran the tournament together for over thirty years. I am sure we will give them a fitting congress in 2024, to inaugurate these awards.
2024 Prizes:
First/ Second / Third
Open £350 / £200 / £150
Major (U2000) £250 / £150 / £100
Inter (U1750) £250 / £150 / £100
Minor (U1625) £250 / £150 / £100
New! Standard (U1450) / £250 / £150 / £100
Team £100
Entry fees remain at the same level as 2023.
When using the online entry system, please ensure you select the right ECF membership level to ensure that your entry fee is correct.
The five section rating boundaries are now
Open (No limit)
Major U2000
Inter U1750
Minor U1625
Standard U1450
Note that the January ORIGINAL rating list will be used for section eligibility purposes. (Congress T&Cs are to be found on the event website.)
Let's make 2024 one of the best Congresses ever (again!!), I look forward to seeing many of you there,
Chris Lamming
