It was the "Budapest Defence" (despite being, in most lines, a gambit!) when I was a lad.

When did the change occur?

I remember its being the Budapest Gambit from when I was starting out, so presumably the crossover was somewhere around 1980 or so.

A excellent question and thanks for asking! I don't have an immediate answer.

It occurred to me that an academic book discussing the chronological evolution of various openings would be of interest.

Some would be more interesting than others. For example evolution of the Benko Gambit, the Trompowski and others would be fun.
