World Senior Team Championships, Dresden 2018

Post by Tim Harding » Wed Apr 25, 2018 12:32 pm

I think it's time to start a separate thread for this event which begins in just over 10 weeks (7-15 July).
Entry lists are filling up though there is still time for more as the closing date (after which entry fees double) is 7 May.

http://www.schachfestival.de/world-team ... ft&tngid=1

I see a very strong USA team has just entered the 50+: Shabalov, Benjamin, Ehlvest, Yermolinsky and Kudrin.
No Russian entries yet. The most curious one is Yemen (all unrated) in the 50+.

USA are second seeds below England 1: Short, Nunn, Speelman, Emms and Hebden.
In all there are 9 English teams so far (5 including women's team in the 50+, 4 in the 65+) plus Wales and Ireland in each section, though Ireland 50+ is not up on the website yet.
I hope the Scots will manage to send teams despite the clash with their Championship?

No Jim Plaskett or Keith Arkell this year, it seems, though changes to teams can be made up to the captains' meeting on the first morning.

I'm still interested to see whether Israel will enter a team, which could be headed by Gelfand and Smirin.

In 2016 Israel entered but did not arrive - no money from their federation maybe.

It's still possible they may send a team, but the chances of Gelfand coming are very low I think, though I'd very much like to meet him.

First time I've played in an Internatonal Tournament where a) contrary to FIDE regulations, they start at 09:30 and b) there are over 30 teams entered by the host nation.

I should be delighted if such a regulation existed, but where can I find it?

The FIDE website is the obvious place
In
http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html? ... w=category
it can be noted that
3. Playing Schedule
3.1 The tournament time-table must not be subject to any change by the organisers unless the players have first been consulted and their advice sought.
3.2 There must be no main playing session before 13.00 hours, local time.
3.3 To maintain the rhythm, all rounds must begin at the same hour, the last round being no exception. Preferred starting time is 15.00 hours.
Mind you, it's a set of regulations that haven't been updated for many years as evidenced by
3.4 It should be kept in mind that most players prefer to continue their adjourned game in the evening after a break of 1-1/2 to 2 hours, not next morning.
3.5 It is the duty of the arbiter to inform every player personally as to any deviation from the normal schedule.
3.5.1 The arbiter should also inform the players when and where the adjourned games will be played.
3.6 There should be a free day before the last round to totally clear any adjourned games, which can, in this case, be played to a finish.
3.7 The last round may be adjourned once and then played to a finish without further adjournments.

Since 1992, so it says. All parts of the Handbook are supposed to be kept up to date by the Commission responsible for them, but I doubt that anyone would admit to ownership of these. In any case, there is

" 7. Application of these Regulations
7.1 A top-level tournament is defined as any event in the FIDE individual world championship cycle or a private tournament of at least category 10."

This seems to let out the Senior Teams, which were in any case not envisaged in 1992.

The document is titled "Recommendations for Organization of Top-level Tournaments".

The subtitle is "Regulations for Organisation of Top-Level Tournaments".

I'm used to the FIDE Commissions struggling to be clear about whether their stuff is a regulation or a recommendation, but even by FIDE's standards you normally get to the meat of the document before being confused about the status of the content.

Part 8 shows how dated that is:
"The Commission strongly recommends organizers to use fax facilities as an expedient measure to publicize their games. It is not necessary to own the fax machine in order to take advantage of their ease and speed of communication."

This suggests that not only was fax deemed the way to communicate speedily back then, but the technology was apparently still new/uncommon enough that some technical details still needed to be clarified.

In 1983 that was probably reasonable. My guess is that the Commission which drafted this has long since disappeared, and it is nobody's job to review and/or delete these sections. When the Central Board of Commissions was set up I though it was intended to fill this gap, but apparently not.

By the way, I remember seeing quite recently that the world's biggest buyer of fax machines is the NHS, which has largely ignored subsequent advances in technology.

It references CHIPS, the "Commission on Chess Publication, Information and Statistics". That acronym doesn't work at all...

The writing style and some of the ideas are those of Stewart Reuben.

In the days when it was a over 60 event and a six hour session, the British Seniors would start at 9:30 in the morning. It later switched to the afternoon, certainly by Sheffield in 2011 but had been in the morning at Great Yarmouth in 2007.

I remember a 2013 questionnaire asking about morning versus afternoon for the Seniors. There were some rather vitriolic comments from people entrenched in both camps.

Hmmm
:?:

(I do note the absence of Nigel Short and John Nunn, though Nunn's wife (Petra) is playing). Tim Harding's original post that started this thread named both Short and Nunn. "England 1: Short, Nunn, Speelman, Emms and Hebden." Tim was rather prescient (unintentionally) when he said "No Jim Plaskett or Keith Arkell this year". The announced teams show that instead of Short and Nunn, we have Plaskett and Arkell!)
