I think this is too much of a generalisation
When I queried why Senior events held in Germany had all games starting at 9.30 I was told this was a concession to decadent foreigners, with the local players preferring something earlier.

The 4NCL arguably copied the weekend double round format from Germany, but has always had an 11:00 am start on the Sunday. Perhaps it helped that the establishment of the 4NCL post-dated the legality of quick-play finishes for Norms and International rating.

Even that relatively late start may have caused problems to squads with an 18-30 or perhaps 18-24 demographic.

I have played in a number of tournaments in Germany since I retired and the rounds have all started in the afternoon.
Dresden has always played its rounds of the World and European team events in the morning. Then Dresden was in the GDR.

Perhaps tournaments in East Germany were played in the Morning and in West Germany they played in the afternoon.

I have examined the details of a number of German Seniors Tournaments due to be held this year and most play in the afternoon.

I am pretty certain it to do with habit. In Eat Germany people started work earlier. Dirk Jordan runs the Dresden events and still thinks that is what all Germans want. Most of the teams in the World Senior Team, when in Dresden come from Germany - possibly even old East Germany. England is the second biggest supporter of these events, but provide a much smaller group than the Gerams.

It is entirely possible that my contact views West Germans as decadent foreigners.

Is there zero tolerance on start times in senior tournaments?
Not that I have a problem with early starts as it will mean I'll be finished and ready for my afternoon nap. (It's a power nap when I'm at work!).

The default time at the start of rounds for the World Senior Teams this summer will be 30 minutes according to the published regulations and it was the same at Acqui Terme last November. I have never played a senior tournament with zero tolerance.

Good luck Stewart & Co.!

There will not be an Irish team at the Euros but we hope to have teams at the Worlds in July for both the 50+ and 65+.

I hope that in Radebeul we will have at least one team from each of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Then we will have a special prize for the British Isles teams for the best improvement in seeding in the event. Included in the English teams there will be one all woman English 50+ team for the first time.

I've put in a query to Dirk and FIDE, on behalf of the Welsh O50's to see if they are flexible on moving the start times. The rules say for top tournaments, that there should be no play before 13:00 and that the preferred time is 15:00. Not expecting much though, from what I've read here. I think that a 9:30 start for a world championship event is just plain wrong.

The first English 50+ team in Radebeul in July will be:
Nigel Short
John Nunn
Jon Speelman
John Emms
Mark Hebden
The final order to be decided nearer the time. That will be the strongest team we have ever fielded.

We are expecting to send a Women's 50+ team to Radebeul. Players so far lined up are
Sheila Jakson
Ingrid Lauterbach
Petra Nunn
It is proving somewhat difficult to contact some of the women who have been inactive for a long time. Anybody who can help can contact me on [email protected].

Russia will no doubt provide stiff opposition, but if Israel can get Gelfand and Smirin interested they will also be competitive.
