True, he really did look worse than Geoff Boycott's auntie with her hiking boots on the wrong feet.

The line played today is one that I had a very good record with when I played 1 e4. I actually distantly remember Tim Harding annotating one of his own wins with it in CHESS back in the 1980s. I always followed up 9 Ne2 with Bc3, and I guess that Vaganian expected that - and so 10 Ng3 perhaps came as a surprise. Well, evidently it was a surprise, since the horrible 11...Bxb2+ can hardly have been preparation. Thus Jim had a won position in twelve moves.

? Tim - I assume the references from Hort are all from his book on the alekhine (with sections on owne's defence and the Nimzo (e4 Nc6) stuck in the back. Green cover - published in the early eighteees I guess.

England 1 are 3-0 up so guaranteed a team medal and quite probably individual ones too.

Transmission failure on the crucial board 1 game in the Armenia match?
If Artur Yusupov wins that, Armenia draw and England get silver, I think.

Armenia won 2.5-1.5 meaning that England will have to settle for bronze whilst Germany take gold by half a game point unless there's some other tie-break that I'm not aware of. Once the rankings are updated we'll know for sure what individual medals England 1 top 4 and Jim Plaskett have won.

The ECF gained a total haul of 10 medals.
Scotland gained the best improvement in ranking prize in the 50+, up 21 places. This despite only drawing with England 3 and losing to the top seed, Iceland, in the last round.

Good result for the 65+ first team 9th seed finishing 4th or 3rd equal to put a better spin on it

Jim is 1 of 4 board 1s with a 7.5 -1.5 record so has done well whatever the tiebreak may be

Keith is 6-1 but the German he was rested against is 7-1 so that decision cost a chance of board and team gold

England 1 individual medals (from Keith Arkell Facebook post)

John Nunn scored 6.5/8 ( silver)
Jonh Speelman scored 6/8 (bronze)
Mark Hebden Scored 6.5/8 ( gold!)
I scored 6/7 ( silver)
and Glenn Flear got 2.5/5 but still managed silver!)
The board medals were awarded by rating performance.

As an Arsenal supporter I have to protest.
Ozil was rather unlucky because he sent Buffon the wrong way and hit the far post. A few inches to the left and he would have scored.

All the other failed penalties in the shootout were truly awful (high, wide or limply struck) but Ozil's was only a marginal error.
