This event is due to take place in Vienna in a couple of weeks time. There are 42 teams and England have done us proud in putting out no less than four teams for this 60+ event. Wales have got a couple in too. Its just one competition so women are in with the men. I only count three women teams so far and if that's so they are all going to win money and medals!

34 England 2 - 13 Schweiz Rtg 2 : 2

13.2 CM Reuben, Stewart 2058 ½ - ½ IM Bhend, Edwin 2195

13.4 Cooper, John G 1987 1 - 0 Reiss, Siegfried 2103

40 England 4 - 19 Stiftung BSW - DBAG I 2 : 2

19.3 Ewart, Brian R 1888 1-0 Villing, Dieter 2039
19.4 Wood, Peter R 1872 ½ - ½ Fleuch, Hans-Juergen 2100

A pretty good start for England, the third team was a bit unlucky to lose so heavily, as one game turn quickly from a win into a loss. Stewart saved a very long ending. England 2 were not entirely happy to play on table 13, because it is right by the door and a bit noisy. We are there again tomorrow...

Rd 2
England 1 v Italy
Finland v England 4
Stiftung BSW - DBAG I v England 2
Niederösterreich - Dyfed Wales
Gwent - Wales v Turku
England 3 v Stiftung BSW - DBAG III

The opening ceremony had the flags of all competing nations, except they used the Union Jack to symbolise England and Wales! However, Wales had the presence of mind to bring 8 small Welsh flags which they placed by their boards.
The top fewmatches are broadcast live, so you can watch England 1 tomorrow morning, 10 am start in Vienna, 9 am in England.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that Keith Richardson had to withdraw for personal reasons and that in consequence James Scholes has transferred from England 1 to England 3.

Draws for A. Stebbings and M. Stokes, both with White.

G. James heading for a draw, but John Quinn's game remains complicated.

(Thanks also to Chris Rice for the thread, and David Sedgwick for the team change news.)

It's a draw, so Eng. I 1.5 - 2.5 Italy.

Good try against a higher-rated (on average) team.

Not a bad day... yesterday Stewart had an argument about a pawn (lack of) promotion, today I was somewhat irritated by my opponent who missed recording several moves then caught up all at once, several times. The arbiters didn't seem too interested. I politely enquired why afterwards and one said that he thought that my opponent had just omitted one move... So he obviously thought my three complaints were about one incident hours earlier! In the midst of all this I missed a win in the ending, and Stewart turned a win into a loss. However, Colin Davison scored a draw from a difficult position.

Going back to Chris's initial remarks about the women's teams all guaranteed medals and prize money, it is perhaps also worth noting that male players have to be born 1955 or earlier, female players have to be born 1965 or earlier, which seems a bit odd. I have not checked the women's actual birth dates and some might qualify. I suppose with one more entry they could have had an APA three times, and as it is they probably didn't want to turn away people eager to play.

The organisers are clearly determined to foster a friendly atmosphere. Stewart and I did a spectacular simultaneous eyebrow raise at the start of round one, when the players were instructed to turn off mobile phones, when he and I assumed that nobody had brought one to the playing hall!

A name from the past there, also someone who played in British club and Congress chess.

Perhaps his most famous game was this Kings Indian six pawn attack, certainly the one that brought him to public attention , hacking up one the best known and strongest Yugoslav GMs.

The age limits of 60+ for men and 50+ for women date back to the introduction of Senior Championships in the 1990s. I imagine that the aim was to secure a meaningful number of women competitors.

Of course most Senior Championships now have two sections, 50+ and 65+, with those age limits applying to both men and women.

Thanks to Roger for reminding me of that Mariotti game. By definition, we have "names from the past"! But I haven't heard much of Mariotti playing recently. I have seen a couple of players that I really had forgotten about, and it's good to see they're still playing!

England 2 are playing Austria 2 in about 20 minutes - they out-rate us, but we will try to do better than the juniors...
