Of course, but for every one of those there will be two more who bash out the latest theory in their pet line and we all know where that can lead... Older players will tend to fall down the rating list due to inconsistency or lack of motivation, but still be capable of playing at the higher level owing to their chess understanding - rating records results, not chess understanding (I am talking about amateur levels, not Keith et al).Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 1:25 pmOlder players sometimes have the advantage that they recognise a (type of) position they saw many years earlier and just know what to do. You can also confuse younger players with 1970's opening theory, which isn't on Chessbase.

Some years ago, my ECF grade was 166 (old money, of course).NickFaulks wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 11:44 amIs there any group of players that is not systemically underrated? Maybe we should fix the system by just adding 100 to everyone.
Then there was a proposal to add 500 to everyone's grade, to eliminate or at least reduce the likelihood of negative grades.
I protested strongly.

The really hardcore will try for early-mid 60s stuff (ie pre Informators)Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 1:25 pmOlder players sometimes have the advantage that they recognise a (type of) position they saw many years earlier and just know what to do. Well, yes - in the pursuit of graniteness, I have used 1.e4 c5, 2.Nf3 e6, 3.d4 cxd4, 4.Nxd4 Bc5, from 1857 (and presumably earlier). Paulsen anticipated Basman!

Kristiansen has lost, so if Nunn can win he gets gold

Now showing as 1-0 although I suspect the final moves are missing.

Seconded. A very welcome turn of events from 2-3 hours in when i thought both the top two boards looked drawish.

John handled that ending really well, which I guess you would expect. Brilliant result - there will be dancing in the streets of Bude tonight.

Tragic game for him, needing only a draw for the title and losing a drawn opposite bishop ending. He had an impregnable position but it looks as though he tried to change it to something even more impregnable, which turned out to be lost.

I wonder how long a reference to the English Chess Forum will survive on the ECF website? Anyway, congrats for your fame, even if shortlived, Kevin. It's also great to see an English World Champion, albeit of us elderly folk!
