There have never been enough entrants to ether British or English Senior competitions to justify a prior qualification event. The same is likely to apply to Women's and Junior events. That's unless they believe numbers participating would have to be seriously restricted.John Hodgson wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 6:18 pmIs it necessary to reduce the number of entrants for the Senior Championship? Is making entry to an OTB event dependent on a willingness to play online a reasonable idea? Should there be an additional method of qualification, e.g. on rating?

Re: Senior Tournaments in 2021
I certainly hope you and Stewart are right since I might conceivably travel to the UK for a Senior Championship in October, depending on dates, venue (especially) and a lot of other things, but I won't be playing the online this time round.
I found the first event a welcome break from home routine but I seriously underperformed.
It is hoped that the Irish OTB championship (and probably supporting events) will be held around the dates of the new British Online and I expect to be involved in that, either as player or arbiter, if it goes ahead.

Is making entry to an OTB event dependent on a willingness to play online a reasonable idea? NO. Some of us may want to play a senior chess event for the first time in our life.

I completely agree, the two are not compatible.John Hodgson wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 6:18 pmI for one might play in a OTB Senior Championship, but not if I have to play in an online tournament under the auspices of Zoom.

Re: Senior Tournaments in 2021
I have received a reply from Kevin Staveley, organiser of the 2021 British Championships.
Given the likely numbers of players in the Senior Champs there will not be a qualifier for either of the seniors events (50+ or 65+) - so you will be OK to enter without playing in the BOCC-2 online events. In the unlikely event that we have more entries for the 50+ and 65+ than we can cope with in the current playing area the contingency plan is to organise additional capacity at or near the venue.
Further material will be published on the website shortly.

Looks like a nice part of the world, albeit not a seaside resort. I'd be tempted if I were eligible.Simon Rogers wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 11:55 pmEuropean Senior Team Chess Championship 2021

The only information is European Senior Team Chess Championship 2021 Polanica-Zdroj, Poland 10-Aug-21 20-Aug-21
I do not intend to travel out of the British Isles until the winter, nor encourage anybody else to do so.
The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the whole of Poland based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.
COVID-19 entry restrictions for Poland
Before you travel, check the ‘Entry requirements’ section for Poland’s current entry restrictions and requirements. These may change with little warning. Monitor this advice for the latest updates and stay in contact with your travel provider.
Returning to the UK
Poland is on the amber list for entering England. Check what you must do to enter England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Check our advice on foreign travel during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and sign up for email alerts for this travel advice.
Flights between UK and Poland are permitted but this could change at short notice.

Meanwhile, for those of us booked to play at the ACO Seniors in sunny Crete in October the latest advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is against all but essential travel to Greece, except for the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos, Corfu and Crete, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.
And in passing, the number of registrations is now up to 211 with the fabulous, all-inclusive, 5-star, Fodele Beach Resort almost booked out. Today’s the last day to claim that €100 discount. https://amateurchess.com/senior2021/

There is also the delayed 2020 event, being held next month: https://amateurchess.com/senior2020/David Gilbert wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 1:01 pmMeanwhile, for those of us booked to play at the ACO Seniors in sunny Crete in October the latest advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is against all but essential travel to Greece, except for the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos, Corfu and Crete, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

Good luck Tim! I hope the chess is good and you enjoy your stay. I prefer the rooms by the downstairs pool (most guests don’t seem to know it exists). It’s wonderful to walk out of your back door in the morning and dive (jump!) straight in for a swim before breakfast. The weather forecast suggests there won’t be a cloud in the sky - take plenty of Factor 50. I shall be staying up every night to read your blog!

Seconded! I am envious, but cannot get away. I have checked anyway, flights look fully booked, so nice to see that many Brits are making their escape while they still can.
