I am assuming the English Seniors at the end of April is an absolute certainty to be cancelled.

No mention of 49 year olds though :)

This event is still not announced as cancelled: why not?

The European Individual Senior Championships, scheduled for Poland in late April (and which ahd a strong entry including GM John Nunn) has been postponed to 16-26 October.

Thanks for the link; they forgot to update https://www.englishchess.org.uk/english ... pionships/ and posted a different page instead, a bit silly really?

Don't be too harsh, please. Many people are under a lot of pressure and stress at the moment and the ECF Office staff are no exception.

The European Senior Team Championship (scheduled for Wroclaw, Poland) in late June/July is now marked "postponed" on the European Chess Union Calendar.
I suspect that the team event will not happen this year. Maybe the Poles will be offered 2021 if Dresden agrees to postpone to 2022.

Dresden is July 2021; can you seriously see any seniors event taking place before then that involves people flying to another country to play?

I'm struggling to see OTB chess taking place until a vaccine is developed

But according to some, that might *never* happen. We can't assume it will solve everything for us.

There is a wrong assumption behind your question. Yes, I don't see many if any going from Ireland or the UK to the European Senior championship if it's held in October, but people living in the heart of the European continent (where a high percentage of active senior players are) don't have to fly to Poland or Germany for chess; they can take the train or drive.
They will do so to see old friends again after missing out on most of 2020.
I have been watching the German senior calendar closely; everything before August is now cancelled but probably some regional events later in the year will be held.

Some may even be willing to risk Italy in November for the World Individual - but I think FIDE should postpone that because there can hardly be enough players from other continents to make it truly representative.

More worrying is the lack of social distancing involved in sitting across a board for a few hours and handling the same pieces. That is what is going to make restarting OTB chess hard - and it must be worse for bridge players?

Yes I know Dresden is scheduled for July 2021 (see my Seniors news and calendar pages at www.chessmail.com) but as somebody mentioned in another thread, FIDE may put back some of its events by 12 months, so that some organisers scheduled for 2021 may be asked to move to 2022 in case those who miss out this year want to take up their option in 2021. Organisers bidding for 2022 have been warned that if this happens they may be offered 2023 instead.

I think OTB for youngsters and young adults won't be back to normal until 2022 but there will be some events next year, maybe even in the second half of this year, that don't involve too much long-distance travel.

As for us old guys living on islands, 2020 is a write-off but we cannot wait for a vaccine that may never arrive, or will be too late for those of us in our Seventies.

I'm not sure that getting the train is going to be safer than flying, but I'm not seeing that you can have a European championship if players from some countries are unable to attend; ditto a World championship

The issue with holding events is who pays for them; if it is the competitors through entry fees/hotel charges, then putting on an event assumes enough take up, and whatever you or I may think, unless enough people want to risk it, the event won't be financially viable

Your final comment seems to imply that the risk of getting the virus will be worth it to play chess; if players think like that, then I'd wonder if they could be trusted to follow the hygiene and distancing rules, so I wouldn't play

Sorry, but I don't think that comment makes much sense. When you are driving a car on a motorway you are aware of the risk that the journey will end in a crash and have concluded the risk is worth taking. That doesn't mean that you don't bother to wear a seat belt.

I'd advise taking at least 12 months out from otb chess until the mud settles if you are a senior, particularly as seniors are the most at risk group by age.
A vaccine might never arrive so it will be down to individuals to decide on the risks involved...society will most certainly be returning to some form of normality but that might involve wearing face masks and surgical gloves...who knows. Life is short and people are not going to stay stuck at home forever regardless of risks involved with social distancing.

I shall be opening our club on the first day our masters permit chess to be played again. Sorry not to see you there.
