OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS TO PLAY CHESS INTERNATIONALLY IN 2020

World 50+, 65+ Chess Team Championships. 5-15 March 2020. Prague.
5th is the arrival day and 15th departure.
http://www.wstcc2020.net/
SUMMARY
A player must be at least 50 or 65 by 31 December 2020 in order to play.
All players must be registered ECF and at least gold card members.
All players must have a FIDE Identification Number (FIN). If you do not have one yet please contact the IRO David Clayton [email protected].
Each player must pay combined €75 team and personal entry fee.
After 25 January this goes up to €100, if accepted by the ECF and the organisers.
There is an optional transfer fee from the airport to the hotel of €10 each way.
There is a booking deposit of €150, together with the entry fee.
Bridgeoverseas will handle the bookings and payments.
[email protected] 01656 747 700 or 08000 346 246, ask for Daniel Cole. The company charges £50 per person for this work. Additionally they are prepared to handle your flights if you prefer.
Accompanying persons pay the same amount as players.
Personal registration is also required 5, or 6 March by 10am.
65+ event will take place in the Olympik Congress Hotel.
50+ event will take place in the Olympik Hotel. They are approximately 180 metres apart.
WOMEN
It is very likely we will be able to raise a women’s 50+ team this time, especially as Dr Jana Bellin has expressed an interest.

ACCOMMODATION COSTS
All players must stay at one of the four designated hotels, listed here.
Olympik Congress fb single €84, double €64 pp
Olympik fb single €84, double €64 pp
Olympik Artemis hb single €88, double €68 pp
Olympik Tristar bb single €54, double €32 pp
The last two are in very close proximity to the Olympik Congress. Personally I shall stay at the Congress. The temperature is likely to be about 10C in the day.

SCHEDULE
Technical meeting 11am for captains. Opening Ceremony 6 March at 1pm. Play 6-14 March from 3pm, except the last round 1pm. Prize giving 8pm 14 March. Departure 15 March.
Rate of play 40 moves in 90 minutes, followed by all remaining moves in 30 minutes, with an increment of 30 second every move from the first. Players must keep score throughout the game. Default time 30 minutes.
Each team consists of either 4 or 5 players with 4 playing in each round. Players may not switch teams after the event starts, nor can the team order change. A 4 player team has the advantage that you play all 9 games. 5 players means you can cope with a player being unwell. Thus for 65 plus, a 5 player team is more advisable. Also the opponents cannot prepare so well in advance against you.

Make certain you take with you your EHIC, European Health Insurance Card. The ECF does provides travel insurance

All players must fill in this form WSTCC 2020 Prague - Entry Request Form
. Please complete it by 15 January, but preferably earlier.
Some players have already booked their flights. This is unwise as there can be no certainty that everybody can be assigned to a team until we have 13 players in each of the two age groups.

Stewart Reuben [email protected]. 02088926660. I am playing. I will be away most of the winter, so anybody with queries, should also contact:

Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell [email protected] , Home – 01727 848883
Work – 01923 664957 He will be playing.
Please copy any communication to all three of us.

What's more, the ACO World Senior Amateur Chess Championships take place on Crete from 5 - 14 October 2020, with seven graded sections. There'll be more details on the ACO website in the next few months https://amateurchess.com

David Gilbert >the ACO World Senior Amateur Chess Championships<

It mat be prejudice on my part, but I don't like to advertise events that 'masquerade' as official FIDE events, when they are not.
Are the games FIDE Rated?

The games are not FIDE rated (as I suspect you know) and the tournament name (like the FIDE equivalent) is silly, but it's a damn good holiday chess event.

Maybe, but British arbiters have been warned about the potential consequences of supporting ACO events, even only as players.

I think that Stewart, as ECF Manager of Senior Chess, is quite right not to promote these tournaments. Anyone interested can get all the information they need from David G and others.

Not a particularly direct warning though - I hadn't noticed it. Of course, I try not to play events where the temperature is likely to exceed 20 C.

I did not know about this document, which contains

"FIDE could apply sanctions on arbiters who take part in any such event, even if only taking part as a player. Hopefully it will not come to that. In 2011 India banned 2700 players for taking part in unrecognised events.

India is not a happy precedent. Their federation has finally been forced to reverse these exclusions, under pressure from FIDE and after losing expensively in the local courts.

The January ECF newsletter makes the rather startling claim that the World Senior Teams is not FIDE rated.

Presumably this stems from confusion with the unofficial events mentioned upthread.

Nick, David
No. It stems from an error tht Mark Rivlin freely admits. He will correct it in the next issue of the ECF nessletter.

It's about time we hosted an international Senior event.

Matching prices available elsewhere in Europe is a likely stumbling block.

A benchmark from the forthcoming European Seniors in Poland for example
10. Accommodation packages in the official hotel
All packages includes accommodation for 10 nights per person in HOTEL VIS, registration fee (60 EUR), ECU entry fee (20 EUR), daily full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner:

830 EUR total in a single room for 10 nights
630 EUR total per person in a two-persons room for 10 nights
530 EUR total per person in a three-persons room for 10 nights

No wonder the average senior chess player is overweight.

I am assuming the English Seniors at the end of April is an absolute certainty to be cancelled.

I would also expect it to be cancelled though when I looked yesterday there were 10 entries for the 50+ and 18 for the 65+.

The European Senior Individuals in Poland after Easter have a strong entry with John Nunn top seed in the 65+ (!) but I would be pretty sure that event will be cancelled or postponed.

Those interested may care to look at http://www.chessmail.com/seniors/Seniors-calendar.html and my other linked pages.
