From the two matches against Russia "we" scored 1.5 points, not bad considering the ratings. Andrew Ledger drew with GM Gleizerov on top board in the 50+.
John Quinn has had a truly remarkable performance on top board for the 65+. With one round to go he has 5/7 for an Rp of 2386, the second best on the board, losing only to GM Rantanen who has 7/7 for Finland. I know John was a bit lucky today that Balashov blundered against him in the ending but I don't think he was ever worse and but for the blunder that game would have been a draw.
Tomorrow the 65+ team (having already met the strongest opposition) meet one of the weakest teams (from Finland).
The 50+ first team play the Slovenian side while England 2 have to play Croatia 1 who are in contention for gold.
Good luck to John and the rest of the English (and Irish) players in the last round.

Andrew Ledger, Julie Denning (both drew with higher-rated opposition) and John Quinn (beating Balashov, who I remember as a promising young player at Hastings!) are entitled to feel pleased with themselves!
I see Tim beat me to it, but I'll leave this as it is.

Just a small correction, Tim. England 2 in the 50+ event are playing Croatia 2. It is Croatia 1 who are in contention for Gold

John Quinn is resting in round 9. His potential opponent is so low rated, that his Tournament Performance Rating would diminish, EVEN if he wins.

They have obviously invented a particularly stupid version, do we know what it is?

So that player would drop his field by at least 35 points, and is therefore 280+ points below the average of his opponents so far.

Not quite, according to the website. That says he's played 7 opponents with an average rating of 2239.6 (score 5/7; TPR 2398). If he'd played in Round 9 his opponent would have been rated 1966, reducing the average rating to 2205.4.

I only had John's word for it. Since he did get silver and had no hope of gold, he was quite correct not to risk playing. After all, we won the match 4-0 anyway.
In the end we got 3 board medals. Brian Ewart in the 65+ with 3.5/7 on the eve of his 80th birthday! Steve Ledger also got one in the 50+ on the same board. He didn't know and was not at the prizegiving.
