European Senior Team Chess Championship 2024

Post by Kevin Thurlow » Mon May 13, 2024 12:22 pm

This seems to have been overlooked...

https://chess-results.com/tnr879983.asp ... =0&flag=30

England I doing very well in the 65+; England II and III in mid-table.
England I doing very well in the 50+, with England II and III in medal contention. England Women trailing at present, but are generally outrated by the opposition.

Good luck all (and to Scotland).

I have been doing daily reports at
https://www.chessmail.com/seniors/EUR-S ... s2024.html

Apparently there was a hosting issue with my site over the weekend, that I only became aware of yesterday morning, but everything should be working correctly now. If anyone comes across a case of a missing image or other file, please PM me.

Play starts daily at 3pm local time (2pm BST) and the top matches in both tournaments are being broadcast on Lichess with a few minutes delay.

In the 50+ England-1 v Iceland and England-2 v Italy are both at
https://lichess.org/broadcast/european- ... 7/rUFE2LCb

On a second page the women's match should be on. Hopefully the broadcast will soon start.

Though there seems to be a longer delay or some transmission issue with the 50+ today.

In the 65+, which started transmitting at 2.15, England-1 v Finland is at
https://lichess.org/broadcast/european- ... 7/hGnjXiVd

From there you can go to a second page showing the England-2 match where 1965 British Champion Peter N. Lee is in action. He has +2 =4 so far in what I believe is his first chess tournament (FIDE-rated anyway) this century as he has chiefly been playing bridge, I gather,.

I have to go out now but will report on round 7 tonight, probably around 9-10pm when the round 8 pairings are available.

The tournament ends on Wednesday.

Peter Lee returned to chess for the Basman Memorial, where we had a friendly chat outside, then found we were playing in the next round. He has been playing for Epsom in Surrey, but this may well be his first FIDE-rated action for a while.

Conquest has just castled on move 30, always fun to see stuff like that. (Lichess says his game is level and Emms's is slightly worse, but there's still a lot of play to be had.)

Sadly the former hadn't finished and eventually lost his ending.

England 1 ahead on tie-break in the 50+ and play England 2 in round 9.

England 65+ won 3-1 and win their event. In the 50+ England 1 also won 3-1 against England 2 but with the chess-results link not working I'm not totally sure what they needed.

50+ bronze for Flear, silver for Davies, gold for Arkell (well done Keith) and Conquest

You could take the view that everybody else was too scared to turn up!

Well done all.

A member of the England 3rd team also did particularly well, achieving +278 points over his published rating. Not bad for an 85-year-old...

That is good - no wonder the last opponent got on his skis before the game.
