Andre Lilienthal (1911-2010)
Natalia Pogonina has just 'tweeted' that the world's oldest GM Andre Lilienthal has died today*. I've not seen on other websites such as TWIC or ChessBase yet, but will seek confirmation. Someone has updated his Wikipedia entry with the date of death already. R.I.P.
The Hungarian source is here

* I'm a bit suspicious of the date of death - it will need confirmation.

The date of death looks suspect as the Hungarian report suggests "three days BEFORE his 99th birthday" (assuming Google has translated it correctly). Will need some confirmation.

Strangely, Edward Winter's site had pictures of Lilienthal when I checked this morning - but, so far as I could see, no indication that he had passed away.

After the loss of Smyslov and Lilienthal, are there any strong players left who played before the Second World War.

The last player alive who played all the pre war "Holy Trinity" (Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine)
Effectively a whole era of chess has died with him
Amongst players still living, the nearest you will get I think is Pomar, who of course played AAA as a kid.

He had a girlfriend, enjoyed a cigarette, drove a sports car .. ! We owe it to his memory not just to revisit his win against Capa.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lilienthal at the Turin Olympiad in 2006. I spoke to him briefly about guess what........his win against Capablanca.
The conversation was conducted in French. Curiously, he spoke French much better than English.
