GM Juzefs Petkevics

Post by Simon Rogers » Sat May 11, 2024 1:39 pm

The sad news has been reported that the Latvian Grandmaster Juzefs Petkevics died on 1st May 2024 in Riga, Latvia at the age of 83.
Juzefs was born in Riga on 19th December 1940.
He was awarded the International Master title in 1980 and the GM title in 2002.
Juzefs shared 1st place in the Latvian Chess Championship on three occasions (1969, 1974 and 1985). He also played for Latvia in the Chess Olympiads of 1994, 1996 and 1998.
At Naumburg in 2002, he won the 12th World Senior Chess Championship and also achieved a peak rating of 2465 in January 1988.
I believe GM Alexei Shirov has posted a lengthy tribute to him.
RIP
