Those comments by Silman on Greco are certainly interesting.

Yes, even more outstanding in his age than Philidor, according to Silman. All Greco's chess achievements were as a young man, as he was dead by about 34.

That is sad news. As Winter's page shows, Silman was an excellent writer on a number of topics. His frank opinion of typesetting 'corrections' includes his views on the Batsford edition of 'My 60 Memorable Games'... Going back to Greco, we see there quotes from the work by Professor Hoffmann (author of the 1900 work on the games of Greco) who is an interesting character who may have turned up in another thread recently (the name is a pseudonym, he was named there under his real name of Angelo John Lewis). Cannot remember if I linked to the Wikipedia article on Hoffmann (Winter also has pages on Hofmann as well):

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_Hoffmann

A much fuller list of his works is given on Wikisource:

https://en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/Author ... John_Lewis

I hope this aside will be forgiven as Silman would, I think, have known of this or taken an interest.

EDIT: Apologies, I see Professor Hoffmann has not been mentioned on this forum before, I followed a link from here to these pages: C.N. 5620 and C.N. 5716.
