Sorry to hear of this. During my last year at Sussex University in 1972, Michael came along one evening to the chess club and delivered a very entertaining and informative lecture on the basics of chess problems. He was a good enough player to beat our secretary (then rated around 175) in a casual game played afterwards. My condolences to his family.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

I met Michael Lipton when he played for Haberdasher's, Hampstead against my school William Ellis.
At that time he had an awesome knowledge of opening theory. I don't think chess problems ever came up for discussion. Julian Farrand was also a pupil at Haberdasher's.
Michael was an interesting character. I was younger than either of them.
