IM Jose Felix Villarreal

Post by Simon Rogers » Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:22 pm

The sad news was reported that the Mexican International Master died on 5th May 2022, after apparently being shot.
Jose Felix Villarreal was born in 1956.
In 1974, he won the Mexican Junior Chess Championship.
In 1975, in Buenos Aires, he won a silver medal in the Pan American Junior Chess Championship.
He two times participated in the World Junior Chess Championships (1973, 1975).
He played for Mexico in the World Student Team Chess Championship of 1977 and the World Youth U26 Team Chess Championship in 1978.
He played for Mexico in the Chess Olympiads of 1978, 1980, 1982, 1994, and 2000.
Jose Felix was awarded the title of International Master in 1980 and died in Tijuana, Mexico.
I've posted more details about his death in the Chess History Category on the Murdered Chess Players Topic.

At this article:

There is a picture of him with his gold medal from the 1980 Olympiad (he scored 9/11 on board 3, the same Olympiad where Jonathan Mestel won Best Game prize).

He was also apparently a civil engineer and professor at the Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana.

I am struggling to find anything confirming this connection. Can anyone more proficient at reading Spanish sources help?

Some of the online sources I found:

Better to focus on his chess.

Here is a really nice win of his from the 1975 World U20 Championships (includes a queen sacrifice):
