John Cooper writes:

I am very sad to have to let you know that Duco Westra has passed away (02/10/2022; aged 88) - hardly 1 week after the death of his brother Roelof.

Never quite as strong a player as his brother - Duco was much keener on his sport: table tennis and golf and football. (Many times he would agree to a quick draw to get back for the football on TV - especially his beloved Ajax!). Nevertheless, he was for nearly 60 years a member and mainstay of our Club and of chess in the Hull & District. He was our Club President for many years and, with Ted Johnson, was responsible for many strong players via the Hull Junior Club

We have lost another great friend to chess, and to lots of chess players.

A wonderful life together. And now the two Brothers are at peace.

and later:

The funeral of Roelof Westra and Duco Westra will take place at 1.30pm on Wednesday 19th October, at St Leonard's Church, Molescroft, Beverley.

Family flowers only - but donations are welcome in memory of the brothers for the Hull & District Chess Association.
