If the account by James is accurate (I don't have any reason to disbelieve it, but I think it is right to still use that caveat), then what was described in the blog linked on the first page of this thread (this is a secondhand account from his wife) is not grooming as I would understand it to be defined. My understanding is that grooming involves becoming overly friendly and would include financial and emotional inducements. An adult physically stroking a child's hair while they are lying on a bed goes far beyond that, and would count as some form of assault (I am not a lawyer so am not sure of the correct terminology here). It would certainly cause psychological trauma in children. The impression here is that Eley went beyond this with those who did not rebuff his advances. As this is a public forum, it may not be appropriate to go further than that, but you would hope that any records made by the BCF at the time were passed to the police, and that the multiple affidavits also referred to elsewhere are still on the record in some way.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 11:00 amJames has always been in the vanguard of expressing concerns about Eley. What happened in Clacton would nowadays be described as grooming.

I would suggest that you contact Julian Clissold, the ECF Board Chairman, and Mike Truran, the ECF Chief Executive.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 9:40 pmKind of you, though in the first instance I imagine it would be the current officials who were responsible for present and past records, no?
I have said as much as I wish to say on this Forum. However, if the ECF were to set up an official enquiry, I would be willing to give evidence and to divulge everything which I know, although much of it is hearsay.

Not sure that 'hearsay' is knowledge, but I would be delighted if an enquiry were to be set up.

I meant that in the sense that I know what I heard. My recollections are surprisingly clear.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 1:43 pmNot sure that 'hearsay' is knowledge, but I would be delighted if an enquiry were to be set up.

Minor correction though: Plaskett was not 14 in 1979.

That means he was 14 when the unsavoury incident happened in Clacton (and I accept that it happened).

That's how many years before the police became involved?

Thanks Jon, I did remember correctly.
I also now recall that the BCF official (who unwisely said that they knew what was going on) also said that he hoped Eley died before he could be brought to trial. This could be interpreted in several ways, (1) we don't want the victims to have the stress of giving evidence, (2) we don't want Eley to tell everyone that he had our approval, (or find ourselves in the witness box, facing aggressive questioning...), (3) we don't want chess in general to be damaged by a trial that would be widely reported, etc.
I heard that Eley spent extended time in Thailand (and maybe Philippines?), if so, when did he return to Netherlands?

Clacton was the venue for the 1974 British, whilst Eley disappeared in 1991.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 9:04 pmThat's how many years before the police became involved?
He had been a Yorkshire official in the 1980s, presumably still one when he absconded.

Re: Brian Eley
I think "enquiry" might be pushing it as a description, but I see no obvious reason why the ECF shouldn't undertake a review of its actions during the period, which would involve both examining all the documentation available to it and inviting submissions from interested parties - which would of course involve the people who were most affected by Eley's activities.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 1:43 pmNot sure that 'hearsay' is knowledge, but I would be delighted if an enquiry were to be set up.

Some of you know I was a senior Police Officer before I retired. I can say with some authority that the fact Eley was on Interpols most wanted list speaks much about the nature of the allegations British Police had received, you don't get circulated by Interpol for trivia. The alleged incidents must have been serious.
