I regret to report that Alastair Mackenzie, a recent member of Harrogate Chess Club, died suddenly on Sunday 3rd April.
Alastair was among the crop of new recruits we acquired after reopening post Covid and was one of the most enthusiastic; representing the club in both the Yorkshire and Leeds leagues. As a player new to match chess his performance could be erratic but when he found his mark he could be a dangerous opponent; occasionally leaving opponents wondering what had just hit them! In the Harrogate club minor he opened with a loss before storming through the field although he lost in the penultimate round to the eventual winner.
In a short time he became a very popular and valued member of the Harrogate chess community and will be very much missed. Our thoughts are with his wife, daughter and stepson Nathaniel - also a chess player.
