Gary Hewitt

Post by Ernie Lazenby » Sat Mar 12, 2022 8:44 am

As President of Cleveland chess association it is with great sadness that I report the passing of Gary Hewitt a stalwart of Darlington Chess club. Gary passed away on Thursday after a short illness. A loyal supporter of his club, much valued for his contribution over many years. In many ways Gary was typical of the backbone of many clubs, an average player but one would not let his club down. A really nice man to be in company and to play a competitive game of chess with, as I did on a number of occasions.
Gary was a regular on the northern tournament circuit, Blackpool, Scarborough etc.
He was an excellent artist often posting his latest creations on his facebook page.
With Garys passing we have lost a friend, a gentleman, a true supporter of chess and an all round good egg.
RIP Gary.

Very sad. Not someone I knew that well when I was at Darlington but it was a very friendly, pleasant club.

I first heard this terrible news on Saturday morning at the Blackpool Congress from a friend who lives in Cleveland.
I first got to know Garry back in 2010, when we played each other in Round 3 of the Intermediate Section at the Scarborough Chess Congress.
Garry had the white pieces, it was an interesting game, played on a Saturday afternoon in the Spa Complex.
Both of us had very long games in the morning (mine lasting 55 moves, which I finally won). Garry and I agreed a quick draw, which gave us the opportunity to have a natter, Garry introduced me to his wife Denise and I believe Garry informed me that he used to be a Police Officer.
Each year at Scarborough and Blackpool we always said hello to each other and had a catch up.
One year at the Scarborough Congress my friend Martin Mitchell and I joined Garry and Denise on the Saturday evening to watch the rubber-faced comedian Phil Cool at the adjacent Spa Theatre. Sadly there was only about 40 people in the audience, but the performance was great and Phil did his famous Popeye the Sailor impression.
Garry and I were fortunate to be paired against each other in Round 4 of the Minor Section at the Blackpool Congress in 2019.
I had the white pieces and I won. The game was very exciting and drew a few spectators. It wasn't the highest of standards but was entertaining. Which I am sure you will agree when I post it.
I was very sad when I didn't see Garry at this years Blackpool Congress and will miss our conversations.
Thoughts are with his wife Denise and his family and clubmates at this sad and difficult time.
RIP, my friend.

I thought the name was familiar and checking my records I played Gary Hewitt in the last round of the U1750 in the 2019 British at Torquay. So presumably that was the last ever game that he played at a British Championships. In the game, he offered a draw in objectively what was a drawn position, but I declined as I could see a potential pitfall for his next move, which he duly played and then resigned after my reply.
