GM Roman Hernandez Onna

I am sorry to report that Cuban Grandmaster, Roman Hernandez Onna died on the 1st June aged 71.
He was born on 23rd November 1949 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.
Roman played for Cuba in the World Student Team Chess Championships between 1963 and 1976.
He also played for Cuba in the Chess Olympiads between 1970 and 1990.
In 1975 he was awarded the title of FIDE International Master.
In the 1977 Las Palmas chess tournament, he shared 4th place with Mikhail Tal and Walter Browne behind Anatoly Karpov, Bent Larsen and Jan Timman. In the tournament he defeated Mikhail Tal with the black pieces.
Also in 1977, Roman shared second place with Oscar Panno and Ulf Andersson in the Biel Chess Festival behind our own Tony Miles.
In the Bogota tournament of 1978 he finished second behind Efim Geller.
Also in 1978, Roman was awarded the title of FIDE Grandmaster.
Roman won the Cuban Chess Championship in 1982.
In 1989, he defeated Bent Larsen with Black and played for Cuba in the World Team Chess Championship.
In 2003, at the Carlos Torre Memorial, he defeated Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu with the black pieces.
In 2014, he became a FIDE Trainer.

One of the players who made Cuba into a significant chess force, rather than (as before) known for just one superstar.
