Post by Simon Rogers » Tue Apr 27, 2021 11:47 pm

I am sorry to report that Ian Brooke passed away recently. He was in his nineties.
Ian was a member of Oxford City Chess Club for many years and was the club Chairman for almost 30 years.
He played for Oxford City Chess Club in the Oxford & District Chess League and also the Chiltern League.
He played in many congresses, including Witney Chess Congress, Frome Congrss, Cotswold Congress and the Kidlington Chess Tournament.
For many years, he also travelled to play in the South Lakes Congress.
Ian was also former Chairman of the Oxfordshire Chess Association and ran the Oxfordshire open team.
There are tributes on the Oxfordshire Chess Association website.
RIP

That's sad news.

I knew Ian from the December 1998 Oxford International Congress (two GM tournaments and one IM tournament). Ian kindly hosted me and Richard Furness. (Richard was chief arbiter whilst I was webmaster/game inputter.) He came across as a calm and capable man and it's clear that he was regarded with great respect and warmth from the tributes paid at the Oxfordshire website (link here). RIP.
