Gennadi Kuzmin (1946-2020)

Post by Matt Mackenzie » Sun Mar 01, 2020 2:18 pm

Died on Friday - Soviet/Ukrainian GM who was one of the world's best players in the early/mid 1970s, and later became a noted trainer.

Nice tribute to him on the Chess.com site.

Thanks Matt for reporting the sad news.
I'm surprised no more replies have been added.
Gennady/Gennadi Kuzmin was a very strong player.
Born on 19th January 1946 in Mariinsk, Russia.
He became a GM in 1973 and achieved a peak rating of 2600 in May 1974.
At the Riga Interzonal in 1979, he did lose to IM Francisco Trois who also died in 2020, on 16th September.
As well as a player, Gennady was a trainer. He coached Women's World Champion Maia Chiburdanidze.
Sadly Gennady passed away on 28th February 2020 in Luhansk, Ukraine after a protracted illness.
RIP
