Malcolm McHugh died peacefully on August 24th. He was a stalwart member of Harrogate Chess Club for many years and a regular at congresses up and down the country until about ten years ago. He was a tenacious opponent who enjoyed the challenge of strong opposition and fighting doggedly in unfavourable positions.
Malcolm was a man of strong principles who demanded high standards and rarely hesitated to speak out when he thought these were lacking. However he balanced this out with an affable (and at times mischievous) sense of humour and was always keen to encourage young and improving players. I used to travel to congresses and matches with him and always enjoyed his company.
