The indefatigable E G Winter now has a feature article up on Benko.
Amongst other things, it seems to show he wasn't paid (at least per se) when he withdrew for RJF in the 1970 Interzonal.

The story seems to be that the USCF were going to pay him a fee had he played. When he withdrew in favour of Fischer, he attended anyway and received the same fee as second to Reshevsky and Addison. That makes a certain amount of sense, but did Fischer get a participation fee and would there have been a paid second for the three of them had Fischer not played?Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 10:20 pmAmongst other things, it seems to show he wasn't paid (at least per se) when he withdrew for RJF in the 1970 Interzonal.
