Barry O'Brien (1943-2026)

I am sorry to inform you that Barry O'Brien of Wallasey Chess Club passed away in the middle of May.
Within twelve months of joining Wallasey Chess Club, Barry was appointed team captain and then Assistant Club Secretary. In the 1980s, Barry helped to organise various fundraising events for Wallasey Chess Club along with publicising events.
Barry also helped with the administration of Lightning and Blitz Tournaments for the club.
He then became Club Secretary and in 1992, he became the Honorary President of the Wirral Chess League, he held the position for the next 32 years.
Barry's forty-year commitment to all those who wanted to play our great game was laudable and in the true spirit of civic duty and welfare.
