Nice one Alex, many knew were coming out but some great excitement at our club!

Spent some time mentioning specific rules to our specific competitions on u estimates of 90 to Jan actuals & when effective from. A penalties for infringement.

Am following up same player for County match purposes as his is officially 140 so rules him out but U160 team yes.

When looking up the top over-50s for all nations, I noticed that Ian Nepomniachtchi (I've copied and pasted that from the list rather than test my memory!) is at the top. I know he's been around for a while but I didn't think he was quite that old ... Has his birth year been recorded incorrectly?

Thanks to all who've worked on preparing this list.

I was expecting my new grade to be based on the games played in the rating period, plus a couple to make 30. Instead it is based on 52 games, which must be the whole year.
Is it the same in July? Ie are the grades always based over the previous 12 months results?

Nick:

"The grade is calculated by dividing the total number of points scored by the number of games played. If there are 30 or more games in the most recent 12 months, then the grade is based on these games alone. If there are not, it is based on the most recent ** 30 games played; or on all the games played in the last 36 months if that is less. In no case does calculation go back more than 36 months. Where games are brought forward from a previous period, they are not recalculated. The number of points scored for a game always remains the same."

Hence, I understand it is always based on a rolling 12 months period, plus any more needed in seeking to get up to 30 games.

It's been like that since the abolition of the X grades.

Yes I must confess I'd misunderstood this nuance of the grading process. So if you play 40 games split 20 each half year then the 30 games in Jan include 10 at your August grade. The 30 for the grade for the second half of the year includes 10 at the half year grade, rather than the average of the 40 games played in the full year. Is this correct?

If you played 40 games in 2017, your grade is based on 20 games in Jan to June 2017 and 20 games in July to Dec 2017. If you carry on playing 20 games a half year, the July 2018 grade is 20 games from July to Dec 2017 and 20 games from Jan to July 2018.

Chess events are mostly repeated at yearly intervals, so the grade always samples 100% of a whole year.

The averaging process only kicks in for less than 30 games. Thus someone who plays only 20 games a year will first have a calculation based on the 20 most recent. What's published is then two thirds of the most recent calculation and one third of the previous one.
