Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
At Crowthorne Chess Club we had a member called Ron Crow who passed way around 15 years ago.
His last rating was in July 2008.
https://www.ecfrating.org.uk/v2/new/pla ... de=109161L
Clearly he has not been an ECF member for many, many years.
He is listed as having a status of "Active".
On the basis of the above can anyone explain what is meant by Active or Inactive in this context?
Can one be Inactive but not deceased?
I will inform the ECF of Ron's passing.

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
I suspect that "Active" just means that the player has played a rated or graded game of chess at some time in the lifetime of the rating system and its eatlier grading ancestors.John Upham wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 12:19 pmOn the basis of the above can anyone explain what is meant by Active or Inactive in this context?

Most clubs have a long tail of not rated but "active" players.

What would you say an "Inactive" player would typically be?Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 12:37 pmI suspect that "Active" just means that the player has played a rated or graded game of chess at some time in the lifetime of the rating system and its eatlier grading ancestors.John Upham wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 12:19 pmOn the basis of the above can anyone explain what is meant by Active or Inactive in this context?

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
Rating codes remain Active until the rating status is changed.
Merged is for cases where data has been added to a duplicate record for that player
Deceased is for cases where a results officer has informed us of the player's death
Inactive is for players who with no active rating ask for their profile to be removed.

Why doesn't a deceased player's grading entry appear on team lists and can only be accessed directly by typing the player's name?

May I take this opportunity to inform you of the passing of Ron CrowBrian Valentine wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 1:28 pmDeceased is for cases where a results officer has informed us of the player's death
and
Gordon Ironside, Peter Davey, Cyril Winter, John Purkiss and Martin Harvey all of whom are shown as "Active".
The most recent of these was Cyril Winter a mere four years ago and the eldest more than 25 years ago.

Can we observe any players designated as "Inactive"? I've not found any examples.Brian Valentine wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 1:28 pmInactive is for players who with no active rating ask for their profile to be removed.

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
In fairness to ECF and its grading/rating officers through the ages, they cannot be expected to trawl through every obituary notice in the land, especially as people with similar names might be wrongly marked as deceased. Many players may not get an obituary notice.
If a club or individual is sure a player is deceased, that club or individual could tell the ECF.

I have informed the ECF of many deceased persons over the years including those mentioned above.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 3:36 pmIn fairness to ECF and its grading/rating officers through the ages, they cannot be expected to trawl through every obituary notice in the land, especially as people with similar names might be wrongly marked as deceased. I usually inform Matt Carr.
They must have slipped through the net.

I believe that this is the paradox I was alluding to.

Yes, I was limiting my comments to deceased members of Crowthorne Chess Club.Neill Cooper wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 10:44 pmGordon N Ironside 113391D and not Gordon Ironside 284742FJohn Upham wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 2:23 pmMay I take this opportunity to inform you of the passing of Ron CrowBrian Valentine wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 1:28 pmDeceased is for cases where a results officer has informed us of the player's death

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
I am so glad that I do not yet show as deceased. I will however remain inactive, probably for ever.
