The Current Rating Fine is ?

Post by John Upham » Tue Nov 02, 2021 2:10 pm

What is the current fine (per game) levied by the ECF on a player (who is not an ECF member) who plays greater than four games in a given rating season?

Last time I looked it was £2.50 but perhaps this figure has changed?

Thanks!

It's no longer charged by game. I think the current Bronze membership fee is charged to each league in which a player has more than three games.

Not that I like the semantic loading of JU's word, but see:

""mutatis mutandis" isn't a phrase I see every day!"

You would do if you read Customs Tariff Classification regulations and documents. However, it seems out of place here. Explanatory documents should be clearly expressed, so all the readers can understand them. Someone is trying to sound clever or trying to make out it's a legal document, or trying to confuse the readers.

Indeed - one needs to be careful about the use of obiter dicta, as writing documents de haut en bas suggests a Weltenschauung more concerned about personal status than appealing to the broadest cross-section of society. When using Latin tags, cui bono?

res ipsa loquitur - as we say at Footlights College.

A couple of points:
- I'm not sure if it's the word 'fine' Paul dislikes but if it is, I think the use of the word is appropriate. I say this because in my view the charge is punitive as it applies to *each* event (or group of events) in which a non-member plays four or more rated standard play games or the equivalent.
- It seems to me that not infrequently questions are asked here which could either be answered by the asker with a little research effort (for example, by looking on the ECF's website) or asked elsewhere.

Excellent example! Soheil keeps producing dreadful examples on the "not chess" area and no wonder he struggles to understand them. I keep wanting to interpolate some "Cockney Rhyming Slang" into posts, but it seems unfair on him...
